I'm reading a really good book called "One Breath at a Time - Buddhism and the Twelve Steps" by Kevin Griffin. It encorporates Buddhism (Theravada/Vipassana) and the 12 Steps in a way that is really comfortable. Reading it is very soothing for someone who has struggled to deal with AA and how it relates to my spirituality. If you have an interest in Buddhism and any addiction problem, you might want to take a looky at this booky.

I *just* ordered this from Amazon for myself. It sounded like a good read, and the right direction for me. Right now I feel like I'm in this Nowhereland with the 12 steps. Lots of barriers with the higher power concept, and no kindred spirits to be found at my local meetings. (I've never been much of a joiner, no surprise there.)
Trudge, trudge, trudge.

I promise you'll like it. It's like being at a sangha meeting. The pace is lovely and somehow meditative and calming. I'm really like it. I'm still trying to get myself to a meeting. Ucky. Wish you lived closer - we could start our own group. We'd begin with an Ommmmmmmmm and chant "Gate Gate Para Gate Para Sam Gate Bodhi Swaha "...then open the blue book!

Is a sangha meeting like a sangria party?

....minus the pinata....and the sangria and the comfy couches. Instead, add in herbal tea, knee pain, feet asleep, and trying not to think about a full bladder whilst you are meditating. :-)

Sorry, Ms Tofutabeest, you can't fool me. You can't be fully Eastern, so you must be Greenwichern or something -- no fully Eastern type can use the word "whilst" with such aplomb!
By the way, I'm glad the book is helpful. I only jumped in to tease for a second, and hope you didn't get offended by it. While I am too much of a cat to chase a Tofutabeest -- or a Spamalope, for that matter -- I still adore you. You always make me purr!

Yes, great book. I emailed the author, and he even wrote back. How lovely.
And, it's nearly impossible to offend a sober Ms Tofu. Now a drunken Ms Tofu....dats unudder story! :-)

> emmyI'm going to look into the book. But this subject has always interested me. I've read about some meditation masters who were boozers (Trunga Rinpoche among others) and their students did not always know how to handle it.
