A few people at another site reccomnded a book to me ages ago,.. at first I couldn't get it in my local book shop, but it was in stock last time I went to my favourite one near work.. "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"
Oh, I am so enjoying it.. but only have 75 pages left.. I so don't want to leave Francie and her family.. Its been on eof those books where I really get to know and like the characters and I will be terribly sad when i finish it.
I finished "Jonathan Norrel and Mr Strange".. all in all a really ownderful book that I would reccomend.. but the very end left me un satisfied. It felt as though the author though "ooh, I better finish this book", and so just finished it.. Not leaving it suddenly, but the last chapter was simply too weak in my eyes. Its a shame that 20 pages out of 800 left me so let down. But its still a really good book.
Also read "The five people you meet in heaven" which was great - incredibly moving - but not sad.. very uplifting (and a short quick read.. I read it in a day - bath thursday night, then bus to work, and finished it on bus on way home )
And talking of short, easy but moving / inspiring, I also read "Whale Rider" which my sister in law lent me. Oh, wonderful book.. and I sobbed my silly heart out on the bus on my way into work *l* Loved it!!
Right, thats my book update *g* I have "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson to read next.. its another huge one, so I may just end up leaving it till the new year.
Oh, and I got "Wagamama The Way of the Noodle" (unlikely to link I think!) as a birthday present.. Its part japanese recipe book, part meditation on the noodle *G* Wagamama is a popular Japanese noodle bar over here (they've got about 15 restaurants now), where simplicity is the key// and the food is wonderful.. and I love the book!

So you like "A tree grows in Brooklyn?" I'm looking for a good book/books to give my wife for Christmas---she's a true blue bookworm. Since you are the resident scholar in this realm, I trust your recommendations. Thanks for your comments Nikki.

"A Tree grows in Brooklyn" is lovely.. Its about a girls life, growing up in poverty.. but its suprisingly uplifting.. if she likes that type of book, I think she would love this!
I'm so hoping for some book vouchers from Santa this year to play with!! *G*

What kind of book does she like as a rule??
"Jonathan Norrel & Mr Strange" is my big (HUGE.. as in 900 pages!) reccomendation this year.. and "Life of Pi" if she's not read it is a MUST!!!
If she's not read the "His Dark Materials" trilogy though (you're in US right?? First one then is Golden Compass, then the Subtle Knife, then The Amber Spyglass) then buy her that.. and yes, thats an order! ;)

Just bought "The Bad Beginning" last night. I haven't finished "Sabriel" yet, but really needed something beyond AN related books, something light and frothy. I know I'll love it, since you said it was good. Next will probably be "Artimis Fowl" -- after I've finished the two series above, of course.
Oh, unless, that is, you come up with something else I should read in the meantime...

The pressure is way too much!!!
I'm readoing a series at the moment.. I am enjoying it.. its escapism, but not sure how nourishing they are.. A love story at the heart of it, set is, um, 17th Century Japan I think.. Warriors and class war and love *l* Who can resist at times! Oh, and swords *nods* Swords are gooood! I havw this thing about warriors and swords.. Hmmm.. Theme for a party for me to drool over me thinks! Oh, the first int he series is called "Across the nightingale floor", then "Grass for his pillow" and I just started "Brilliance of the moon".. OK, so they're not the greatest work of fiction, but they nice!!
I think I'm going to read some more Haruki Murakmi next while I'm in a Japanese themed mood!!
I am in need of some great reccomendations from people though..
