Two of the funniest books I've ever read

Posted by ron1953 on September 29, 2004, at 8:11:13

"Practical Demonkeeping" and "Coyote Blue" by Christopher Moore had me nearly hysterical throughout the entire read. Christopher Moore's off-the-wall humor is original and refreshing. Everybody I recommended them to loved them.

Thanks for posting that, Ron. It's so important to have humorous books to turn to when you're trying to keep your spirits up.

Kara:

Humor is some of the best medicine in the world. I read lots of serious stuff but eventually get psych overload. It's not just books, either. I look for the funny side of things, love to tell jokes, make fun of the absurdities of life, kid with strangers in the grocery line, etc.. With so much serious stuff in everyday life plus depression/meds, divorce and career problems, humor is often the only thing that keeps me sane.

That's exactly how I feel. I don't always manage to be homorous but I try. BTW, I read above that you also cook. Would you mind shipping yourself in my direction? I'll pay all of the shipping!

Also, I referred your two books to a friend of mine and she's going to read them. She told me that the funniest book she ever read was "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole. I've never read it but I'm adding it to my list as well as your two.

Kara:

A Confederacy of Dunces sounds familiar but I'm not sure whether I've read it. I'll have to look on Amazon for excerpts or take a look next time I go to the library (which I need to do soon as I don't have anything to read).

These offers are very flattering but I don't want anybody fighting over me. So, I'm going to auction myself off or rent by the hour - LOL

On the serious side, I've always enjoyed conversing with women more than men, overall.

Well, I'm not going to fight over you! Your ego has gotten to large. :-)

I usually prefer talking to men who prefer talking to women.

Is the funniest book I have ever read.. "Red Dwarf: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers" Its based on the Red Dwarf TV series here in the UK.. I had to stop reading this at points because tears were rolling down my cheeks! *l*

And ofcourse, how could I not mention "The Eyre Affair" by Jasper Fforde and the sequals.. utterly hilarious, and I know I keep going on and on about them here, but they really are an amazing find!!

Ok, you've convinced me to add them to the list.
I don't know anything about the "Red Dwarf" TV series. Do I need to in order to understand the book?

In terms of Jasper Fforde, I haven't read anything of his yet but any guy who has the same name as my cat has my interest already! (Fforde's books are fiction aren't they?. A friend of mine thought they were non-fiction for some reason.)

No need to have seen the TV series.. The book actually starts before the TV series started if that makes sense!!

And Jasper Fforde books are VERY much fiction *lol* Unless less people have pet Dodo's in the real world *lol* Seriously, very enjoyable!

I have seen most of the Red Dwarf series on tape. It makes me laugh til I cry and/or pee. I especially love Cat...."I'm gunna eat a little fishie!"

I had no idea there was related literature. I must read it!

"DWAYNE DIBLEY??????!!!!!!!!!!!!"

THAT has to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen *l* The orginal Dwayne Dibley episode.. the cat is AWESOME!

Anyway, the books will have to doubled up drying with laughter I promise.. Holly (male) is one of the funniest creations ever in my opinion!

I order you to read them!!

ps - one thing I love about this board is how it makes me think of all the books I have ever read. It was 11 years ago I read the Red Dwarf book (nd its been a long 11 years! Especia;ly since I was 18 then *l*) and I'd forgotten how I'd loved them!! The "Better than life" one isn't as good as the first.. kinda wierd.. but still, fantastic books!

My next amazon order will include the book, "Red Dwarf" - I love the tv series. I also need to check out Christopher Moore's books.

My two favs (without too much thought) are: "The Fan Man" by Kotzwinkle and "The Milagro Beanfield War" by Nichols.
