>Sandy, now young lady, you listen to me. I am a SERIOUS book club member. I expect you to take notes, be prepared to discuss theories, backgrounds, what the author was eating when the book was written, the whole enchilada. ARE YOU PREPARED TO TAKE THIS MISSION ON??
Man, am I SO glad to see you back on this board. Don't desert me, baby, I couldn't take it again.

Hey there PC,
You mentioned that you might be interested in reading "Bound By Duty: Walking the Beat With Canada's Cops".
I just read the back cover, and it sounds quite interesting.
"The people from the communities I know best...the marginalized, the poor, the addicted, the mentally ill, the homeless...know, more than most, the realities of Canadian law enforcement, its flaws, its abuses, its golden moments. These people understand what it's like to be at the mercy of others (too many others), whether they're being interrogated by a welfare worker, condemned by Children's Aid, turned away from shelters or committed to an institution. These people know that there has always been a two-tier system of policing: one for the haves, one for the have-nots. Out on the street, in city parks and alleyways, in rundown bars and boarding homes, you learn fast that an unhappy cop can be as lethal and destructive as a disgruntled postal worker.
But a police force is not a monolith; it is a living, breathing organization of individuals. I've felt the real empathy and determination of cops investigating the deaths of those labeled 'mentally ill' for the coroner's office; I know officers have a far greater understanding of the challenges facing our communities than most social workers."

I have it on order. It sounds very intriguing! This time we'll have to write book reports and grade each other :)

Oh no, PC! I hope you didn't actually PURCHASE the book. I hope you meant you "ordered it" from the Library. I wasn't actually recommending the book because I haven't even looked inside it yet. Lol! I just mentioned what was printed on the back cover. Yikes!
By the way, I've begun to read "Kisscut". I thought it wasn't written very well when I first started it, but she actually begins to weave a story into it and you can forgive her for the "easy" reading. It may be good.

that I'll buy a book with the flimsiest of excuses. I'm getting it used, if that's better. I absolutely cannot stand the libraries here. I was way too spoiled in Canada.

I've read "House of sand and fog" from that list and really loved it.. I then watched the movie on the way home from Thailand and thought the film was actually a very good representation of the book (though the policeman was lacking his moustache in the film, and that bothered me!! In the book (in my head) he looked just like my best friends husband, ut didn't int he film!)
So, yesterday, I had a meezly £10 to my name.. so what do I do with it?? But a book ofcourse!! *laughing*
So, after reccomendations here, I bought "Running with scissors".. after a 90 min bus ride yesterday (went to the UK Big Brother Eviction last night.. HUGE fun!!) I'm about a quarter of way through and loving it..I love reccomendations from here.. some of the best books I've read have been from here..
PB Books ROCKS!!!!!

I love it when the brain is geared towards reading! So many times, due to our "difficulties", we can't seem to find the energy or even the ability to read. Isn't it a blessing when we can read a sentence and understand it....and then keep moving on through the story?? WooHoo!!!
I hope you enjoy your new book! I don't have that kind of money to spare (especially with book prices being outrageous here in Canada!), so I place orders through the Library. I've actually got almost 100 items on "Suspended" at the Library. Every three weeks, when the Library delivers to my home, I will "Activate" a few of my items and find them in a nice Library bag waiting for me at the door. Gotta love the Library!!!! (This also works for movies, too! I place orders for all the new movies that come out so I never pay for rental fees! Yeah!).
Have yourself a GREAT day!!!

Oh oh. I hope the book didn't cost too much. And I *hope* it will be worth it. We'll definately have to read that one together, just so you can get your money's worth!!
I just discovered the "Kisscut" is Book #2. Darn! I was wondering why there seemed to be a continuation of a story-line. Oh well, I'll read this one and then do Book #1. Why not? We don't always have to color within the lines, right?? Lol!
Are you reading anything right at the moment?
Hugs,
Sandy

No, I've run out of fresh reading materials. Thank heaven a Smithsonian magazine came in the mail, though it's mostly just photos and ads these days.
It drives me absolutely buggy to be able to read but not have anything at hand.
(Are you feeling less teary today, Sandy?? It's such an awful feeling when you can't stop.)

IU've never actually met a PB person before!!!! How exciting is this!!
I've met TONS of people from other websites.. most of my clostest friends now I met online.. oh, and then theres the husband I found online too *giggles* This chatsite I used years ago (still there, but boy has it been taken over by pathetic little idiots these days!) was so wonderful, and a huge group of us moved from chat site to chat site with each other and we're all so very close.. its wonderful!!! And I've met a few people from another board I used about 8 years ago (but is also now closed unfortunately - luckily, some of them are good real time friends now).. and on thursday I get to meet a bunch of people from an authors forum I use!!!
So meeting someone from PB after all these years will be SO cool!!!

We're going on the 14th of August. The plane will fly to Gatwick from Atlanta with no stop, so I'll have to wave out the window at you, Sandy!
I am very excited to show my husband "my" England and meet with a real live babbler.

Well, I'm just so excited for you two! You'll have to do a book exchange!!
And I'm surprised that you're not refueling on the coast before doing the trans-Atlantic flight. Is it possibly a really cheap ticket?? Lol!!
Are you packing your bags yet?? I know I had so much fun when I brought hubby back to Canada. He loved it here! He commented that in California we have tons of garbage on the sides of the road, but in NS we have no garbage but tons of dead animals on the sides of the road!!!! LOL!!!!!
Have fun, fun, fun......oh, and maybe a little bit of fun too!!

We're flying Delta with air miles. This is one benefit of my husband's frequently traveling that I appreciate. And that is so funny what your hubby said about road kill. I couldn't believe there weren't any dead animals by the side of the road in the US when I moved here in 1983. I also thought the sanitation department must have been on strike!
I am thrilled to be able to return to England after such an traumatic departure in 1996. And lovely to see a country that I know *fairly* well.

Okay, I finished "Kisscut" last night. It was okay, but not the greatest. I don't think I would recommend it. That being said, I have to read the first book in the series now just to find out what happened to the character in the second book!!!! Lol!
I'm going to start "The Lazarus Child" next. It's about a little girl being in a coma after being hit by a vehicle.
Have a great day!

Sounds like your reading cylinders are firing - that is wonderful! I once read a story about a girl in a coma after an accident - strange tale about how she dreamt of the (real) Wizard of Oz tale and the high-tech treatment involved inserting themselves into her dream to rescue her. It was way neat, even if it was a glorified grown-up comic book. Can't remember the name or author, LOL but that's not surprising these days.
Keep eating those words up, Sandy! I desperately need a new tome to pour over. I'm starting to read kleenex boxes and air freshener cans, not a good sign....

Wouldn't you know it, PartyCloud. I watched The Amazing Race tonight, and what airline was mentioned?? None other than SwissAir. Just the type of reminder that I needed for tonight, of all nights, right? *sigh*
Took my Seroquel. Going to bed now.

PartlyCloudy,
I read "Bound By Duty" when you were on vacation. I'm so sorry that you actually paid bucks to get this book because........it wasn't any good!!! Uck! It'll only take you a day to read the darn thing, and the author isn't much of a writer. Oh well, you never know until you try, right??
Take care!

The only part of the book that sounded interesting was the bit about the making of the movie in Vancouver - which the author didn't even contribute to!! Oh, well. Maybe I should take a crack at writing that Great Canadian Novel after all. Looks like it would have a chance at getting published : )
