His Dark Materials, by Phillip Pullman.
Anyone read? Only thing I've gotten through in almost a year now, and could hardly put it down. (Remember, I'm the "escape into a book" chick)
Scottish mathematician Ian Stewart (a vivid writer in his own right) was quoted in New Scientist as saying "the armored bears were brilliant!" Now, who could resist that?
It's a trilogy for young adults, and it's great for adults -- lots of good life lessons, made more interesting for being accessible to for young adults who may not yet have come across the 75 cent words adult books might use to describe the same concepts. Pullman's portrait of God, by the way, is heartwrenching to say the least. For that alone, it is worth reading.
And as one of those who really likes meeting up with lesser-known figures from myth and religion, the presence of Metatron is like running into an old friend unexpectedly.
Don't forget the weird creatures that travel on seedpods.
So, who's read it, and who wants to know more?

"His Dark materials" are the greatest most wonderful amazing books ever written in my opinion. Philip Pullman is my new hero in life!!!
The books drag you in and you can so perfectly lose youself in Lyra's world.. Don't be put off by Lyra in the first 1/3 of the first book.. (um.. "Golden Compass" to you, though Northern Lights to me).. she's a little bratty and annoying, but she SO improves..
I have read the 3 books about 5 times.. I have books about the books.. study books.. science off book.. I have seen the plays, and have both the t-shirts from that..
The armoured bears *sighs* wonderful and perfect.. and actually quite well done in the play.. Though Seraphina Pekkala I adore so much and want to be.. I want to be a witch.
The whole theme behind the story has guven me so much to ponder on.. the world of the dead and the release just matches what I want to believe so much.
And my belief that there is a power out there, but organised religion isn't correct in their interpretation..And I adore love stories that are so nutritious..
Oh.. and have you read "Lyras Oxford"?? thats lovely.. only little, but a wonderful map of Lyra's Oxford and other bits, plus a story called "Lyra and the birds".
And Pullman is currently writing another book in the series.. though rumours suggest its a prequel about the romance between Asriel and Mrs Coulter (Oh, Lord Asriel was played by Timothy Dalton in the play and was wonderful!)
Mind blowing.. I urge EVERYONE to read these!!!

...after seeing The Subtle Knife on my writing teacher's desk and decided it looked interesting enough to check out. Definitely one of the better book choices I've made almost on a whim! I couldn't comment further except that I remember disagreeing on some points but still found it an amazing read. I don't remember quite what I disagreed with or enjoyed because my memory is really horrible. I had no idea there was anything else based around these books, though I guess I should've guessed how popular they were when it seemed like everyone came up to me as I was reading The Amber Spyglass and said "It's good, but you'll HATE the ending!"
I think I may give them a reread sometime this summer, though the pile of books I still have left to read suggests otherwise...

I *loved* the ending.. I really did. the fact he didn't give in to making it sweet and sappy and actually explained why it had to be this way..
I loved it, and can't wait for the next installment!!!
