I just finished "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. It's one of those books which you don't want to end, because you'll miss the characters so much.

That is one that caught my eye a while back, too. *sigh*--add it to my long list of books yet to read.....While on the subject of bees.....I started "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" last summer when I was visiting someone who had it in their home, but never finished it. It was very good.

You what's sweet? I gave my copy to the patients at the hospital where I work. They are reading it aloud before bed - sorta like story hour. They help each other with the big words. :-)

This book also touched me deeply - all the characters were fascinating. I was surprised to try Sue Monk Kidd's other books to discover that they are deeply religious. Kind of put me off.

That's the exact same thing that happened to me. When I finished the book, I went to amazon to see what else she wrote. I wasn't into the rest of her published works. But I'll wait to see what's next.
I gave the book to out patients during Black History month. On the unit, we have a very diverse crowd as far as race and ethnicity (and every other aspect of humanity!). For many patients, this is the first time they've ever lived in a mixed environment. I think this book really cements the concept of racism as *taught* by the people we grow up around.
It's been a real conversation starter for some patients. Truly has offered growth opportunities. Maybe that goes full circle back to the author's spiritual roots?

I love that book! I luxuriated in the pleasure of this well written and wonderful book. I loved the women and cried when one of them died in the river. I could totally relate to our main character when she went through her breakdown. What a special book.
If you haven't read this book put your current book down and pick this gem up.....you will not be sorry.
