Noa - I finished garp - and my usual book ramble!!

Posted by NikkiT2 on November 13, 2003, at 9:53:54

Finished "The World According to Garp" on Saturday, but forgot to post.. sorry!!! I loved it.. really really loved it. I especially liked the very end, where it told of what happened to each character.. That gave me closure, which books very rarely do!!

So.. yur thoughts??!!

I also finished "Roverandom" which was really cute..

Now reading "The Impressionist" and am half way through that already.. is really good so far.

Then I might move onto the Dark Tower books by Stephen King as so many people have reccomended them, and J bought the ifrst 2 and Father in law has given us third one..

But December is traditionally Lord of the Rings month for me *lol* Might hold that off till new year.. though I am getting strong urges to re-read "The Hobbit" *g*

Oh, and great news.. Phillip Pullman is writing a fourth book in "His Dark Materials" series.. YAY!! I'm so excited about that!! He's released "Lyra's Oxford" this week, which I think I will be getting for my birthday next week, so haven't bought that for myself yet!!

happy reading everyone!!

Well, one of the things I liked about the book was how it dealt with quirky human delusions like how Garp was so obsessed with protecting his family from dangers from without, but the biggest dangers to his beloved family came from within, and he ended up being the cause to his own family of any family's worst nightmares!

This is kind of like what I saw as the main theme of the movie "After Hours", a film by Martin Scorsese, which portrayed how complicated, unpredictible and perilous human relationships can be (with Kafka-esque frustration and plenty of references to the Wizard of Oz), in contrast to how safe and uncomplicated Griffin Dunne's character's relationship with his computer was, while people around him had been demonizing the computers out of fear.

This is why people demonize anyone who is different, and fail to really see the dangers that come from ordinary insiders.
