Book clubs

Posted by Penny on October 16, 2003, at 10:54:06

Questions:

How might one find a book club (a real-life, in-person book club, not one online)?

OR - how might one go about starting a book club (again, real-life, in-person, as part of the purpose is to expand my social circle)?

Thanks.

Penny,

I would start by talking to your local librarian. I've noticed my local libraries do a lot to support reading groups/book clubs, etc. I think the librarian would know of local clubs and also have info on how to start a club if you wanted to.

Also, some book stores do similar things--so try asking the manager. Especially at a truly LOCAL bookstore (I know of one that has a special section for book club selections and also provides space for meetings), although I think the chain stores also support reading groups, or may sponsor their own.

I'd also ask local community centers, Y's, etc., too.

But I'd start with the librarian. Even if they don't have info handy, I have found that they are very helpful in digging up info for patrons who ask.

Thanks, Noa!

I have looked on the bulletin boards at the library to see if there are notices of any book clubs, but, alas, have seen nothing. But I will make sure to ask the librarian the next time I am there.
