I don't like nominating books...

Posted by NikkiT2 on January 9, 2003, at 6:12:03

Cos then I'd nominate a book I plan to read anyway.. the thing I love about it here is that I get to read a book I wouldn't normnally have thought of (though the nomination process often leads me to toher reads too!).. I like that!!

I'm not very good at discussing the books either, but I really enjoy reading the book and seeing what others have to say about it.. I don;t have the confidence to give me opinion often, but what others say really interests me and gives me a better understanding of what I've read.

I have the same feelings about nominating, in addition to not wanting to feel responsible for a bad book. :) I don't mind discussing, but I wish there was more discussion on each book.

But voting we can all do. I think the deadline was today, wasn't it Dr. Bob? Does anyone have any other nominations?

Sorry to be so intrusive, but I think it would be simpler if votes went in the same thread as nominations, so I reposted this above:

Dinah, you're so persuasive!

I need to add a disclaimer here. I didn't read the past nominations and I don't even know what the other books have been. So I nominate:

The Death of Vishnu (Manil Suri)
A Thousand Acres (Jane Smiley)
Fast Food Nation (Eric Schlosser)
The Hours: I don't remember who wrote it am to lazy to look. But I've wanted to read it again because I was on Tegretol on the time! A plus (?)is that the movie has just came out. But we wouldn't want any cheaters. Maybe we could have a quiz!

Finnegan's Wake is too much. Esp. for a lighthearted happy little book club. And I think i can speak for many- the meds cause fogginess, cognitive impairment and attn difficulties! :D

Hey Dinah- it's only out in "selected theaters"...haven't seen it yet. Supposed to be really good though. Meryl Streep stars with Nicole Kidman (I know, but she's good in this and even wears a different nose because she's playing Virginia Woolf), Ed Harris and others. it's not an historical novel...just intertwines the lives of 3 women. And 1 of them is Woolf.
Best,
K

Oh oh. Hope people enjoy ITLOTW. Don't want to be branded as a 'bad book nominator'. :)

It sounds interesting to me. It almost seems a dejavu *possiblity* with war looming nowadays. I read the intro pages on Amazon and I got something of a "Heart of Darkness" type feeling about it (I haven't *read* that book, but I did see "Apocalypse Now"). I haven't read a "bad book" yet. I liked "Awakenings" overall, you just have to pick out the patient experiences and get focused on those and it was killer...Mitch
