Shock therapy for alcoholics and drug addicts

Posted by Gracie2 on October 10, 2002, at 23:07:30

For anyone confronting alcohol addiction, I recommend "Terry" by George McGovern. This is a loving and honest book by the father of a brave, intelligent woman who had the most extreme addiction to alcohol that I've ever heard of. Her experiences and shame were so painful to read about that I cannot imagine bearing such torture myself, or for someone I cared about.

"The Tennis Partner" by Abraham Verghese is the story of a doctor who befriends a medical student
with a drug problem. It's a touching, well-written book that discusses the little-known world of MDs addicted to narcotics.

I guarantee both books are absolutely fascinating reading.

Hi,
My favorite books along this line are Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp, and Take the Long Way Home by Susan Gordon Lydon (unfortunately out of print). Both are books I read and re-read.

Another good book by Verghese

He wrote an earlier book which I thought was great. "My Own Country" is about working with Aids patients in Tennessee at a time when people denied they had a gay population and also about living there as an outsider.

Jane,

Late as this is - I'll second that about "My Own Country" -- made me want to go to med school for a while (then I wised up!). "The Tennis Partner" looks very interesting, too...

"So many books, so little time..."

best,

Wendy
