On suicide

Recently I found a book called "On Waking Up, Alive" by Richard Heckler. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who, like myself,
made a serious attempt at suicide and woke up,
bewildered/disappointed/relieved/guilty, and alive.

To anyone deeply depressed and considering suicide I would suggest "Darkness Visible" by William Styron. This renowned writer (author of many books including "Sophie's Choice") was blessed with talent, recognition, money, a good marriage, close friends, world travels, and a story-book home.
Yet he became so terribly depressed that he wavered on the brink of madness and suicide. He describes this descent with such clarity that, despite his privilaged life, it is easy to identify with his feelings. And to find some hope in the fact that he did get better.

I read that one too. It was very moving and inspiring to me. I had never seen any book try to explain the mental process involved. It helped me start to see "the tunnel" happening. Suicide does indeed seem to beckon at times. Now I recognize that as a warning sign rather than truth.
