Pertinent and poignant you won't put this book down!
Illustrations just leap off the page...
And the title I think gives away most of the plot but reveals adversity I think we all can relate toohttp://hallchildren.com/ages_4-8/33.shtml
Well I enjoyed it

It's a regular part of our family life. We've incorporated into our inspiration family evenings whenever it's needed.
A truly meaningful book, addressing universal human emotions.

this book does indeed deserve a place of honor on every person's book shelf, young or old, challenged with mental illness or Not. It can be re read over and over with no loss of serious meaning nor delightful squeals. The Alexander character is us all. Perhaps we could have a month just devoted to childrens books which address the issues we face here? Just another random thought.

I think that's a great idea! When I get stressed out at work, I bring my copy of "The Cat in the Hat" with me. Maybe we need to read something a little lighter :)

I was *serious*! I don't think there are any rules that say we *couldn't* pick children's literature. There is a lot of children's lit. that seems more designed for adults anyhow.. Bullwinkle for example. :)

Well, I like the kids' books idea the best, but here are three additional suggestions.
Beowulf: A New Verse Translation by Seamus Heaney
When the Cheering Stopped: The Last Years of Woodrow Wilson by Gene Smith
Lincoln's Virtues: An Ethical Biography by William Lee Miller

Everything That Rises Must Converge Short stories by Flannery O'Connor
"You've got to face the facts: Asbury can't write so he gets sick. He's going to be an invalid instead of an artist. Do you know what he needs?""No,"his mother said.
"Two or three shock treatments,"Mary George said. "Get that artist business out of his head once and for all."
His mother gave a little cry and he grasped for the banister.
"Mark my words,"his sister continued, "all he's going to be around here for the next fifty years is a decoration."
He went back to bed.
-from the Enduring Chill, one of my personal favorite stories.

Does this collection have the story about the waiting room in it? I have only read one of O'Connor's stories (in a lit class back in the early '80s). It is about all of these people waiting to see a doctor in a clinic. I can vaguely remember it, but I remember liking it a lot.Mitch
