OK, what next?

Posted by Dr. Bob on June 21, 2002, at 10:24:35

Hi, everyone,

It was 2 for forge ahead, and 0 for more on Owen, so forge ahead it is! What shall it be? Mouse in the Stacks just posted a number of suggestions:

Plus there's everything that's been brought up before, too...

More John Irving?

That would probably be over my head to but I'd enjoy eavesdropping on the discussion. And I remember someone commenting on "typical Irving". It would be a way to see what that is.

That sounds interesting-somehow the recent match between Lewis/Tyson seems to make that more meaningful somehow.. I want to read something that I have never read before-or else it isn't any fun! I have only read a couple of Hemingway short stories, no novels. Which one?

A Farewell to Arms, was mentioned before...hmmm could be about war and the loss of arms another comparison to Owen....
Hemmingway was raised Congregationalist too...

How about the Sun Also Rises instead of A Farewell to Arms? The Sun has this tormented main character, Jake Barnes, who's an especial favorite of mine, and has one of my top quotes ever: "It's easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it's another matter." I wrote a whole short story based on that quote once.

Sorry to butt in, I'm kinda new here; just a thought.

Allie
