Book reccomendations please!!!

Posted by NikkiT2 on May 31, 2002, at 17:20:36

OK, I like books that are stories about peoples lives.. I'm n ot really into thrillers or horror or crime stuff, but simple stories!!!

As an idea, my fave authors include Issabele Allende, Neal Stephenson, Tolkein (ok, only read lord of the rings & the hobbit) but i adore that book!)...

I'm running out of good books to read!!! I did splurge today on 3 books.. Atonement by Ian McEwen, The General in His Labyrinth by Gabriel Garcia marquez, and The Notebooks of Don Rigoberto by Mario Vargas Llosa.

Just thought it would be a good thread too!!!

Susan...

Interesting little thingie you have there.
Were you attempting to "illustrate" something
relating to Spanish mysticism? It looks like some sort of playing element in an Joan Mirro painting. Kind of like a roadrunner darting (or fixing to dart) across the page. I never read any Spanish writers just yet. Nikki's idea about the Marquez novel sounds intriguing. :)

Stones from the River is about as good a book as I've read in the last few (even several) years. If you really like stories about people's lives, then this should be good for you.

Have you read anything by Julia Alvarez? "How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents" is good, and a great title too?

Yes, yes! I actually thought of that about two hours afer I posted it. SusanC=Mouse Yet again, one more DUH for the road! You see above I already have fudged up whose parents I was supposed to talk about! Maybe it isn't ADHD I suffer from.. it is GCD-NOS (generalized cluelessness disorder-not otherwise specified) :)

Wow, I really didn't think that John would allow Owen to cut off his finger! What a trip. I am ready to start the last chapter tomorrow. This is finally starting to get a little close to home. My older brother was drafted in 1967. He didn't serve in Nam though. I remember skipping school in 3rd grade and going through his drawer and looking at all of his army stuff, while he was in basic training. I remember driving with my family and visiting him on base and he gave me my first LP "Sock it To Me"-Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels. Somebody on the base had marked on the record "Waldo Elvis". It cracked me up! Everybody back then marked their names on the records so they would get theirs back after a party-interesting.
