Owen Meany - anyone else finding it hard going??

Posted by NikkiT2 on May 19, 2002, at 15:33:43

I'm really finding this hard going at the moment.. I'm about a third of the way through it.

I just can't build up a relationship with the characters - i don't really care what happens to them still..

I'm still trying.. many great books are hard going at first but end up brialliantly!!

I'm finding it a lot easier than Dunces. I probably won't actually finish it though. No concentration. I've enjoyed skipping around in it.

I always skip around in books. I just about finished Antarctica, but it got too tedious, even with my skipping around. I think reading a book, is like eating in a new restaurant, you need to pick out what you think you might like not worry about ordering every dish :P

I read this book several years ago and absolutely loved it. I decided to read it again with the group. I'm enjoying it, but I'm not consumed with it like as was the first time around, so I, too, am finding it a little slow going. Maybe it's that I'm too busy now and don't have much time to read. When things are like that, I do better with totally formulaic stuff that I can whizz through - this isn't that kind of book. I'm not as far along as Nikki, but I'm not going to give up either.

My problem is that I've seen the movie "Simon Birch" which is based on Owen Meany....I'm having a hard time with it, because I feel like I already know what's going to happen....anyone else catch this, seen the movie, etc.?

Anyone have any ideas on how to 'get into' reading it when you've seen the movie it's based on?

I'm about 2/3's of way through now and almost enjoying it.. Its not great, but its getting alot better and alot easier to follow.

I'm hanging in there with it - I refuse to give up!!

Well, I doubt I'll ever finish the book, but you did get me interested enough to rent the movie. So far the dialogue seems straight from the book. I wonder why they said it was inspired by the book rather than based on the book. To use the same dialogue exactly seems more than inspired.

My thoughts exactly! So I'm having a hard time reading the book for this reason...I can't read a book after the movie, but have no problem watching the movie after I read the book...don't know why that is either.

Still trudging through with a half-million other things on my plate...
