I read it 2 years ago, kept going back after each chapter and reading the best parts out loud, trying to keep the book from ending.
The last sentence in the story kept me sitting rigidly for 15 minutes. Devastating. For the next few days the first thing I did when I woke up was grab the book and read that line again, and the whole story and all the characters came vividly back. Not bad for someone who can rarely keep a storylines straight, much less the characters.
To this day I worry about them, wondering how they're getting on.
Oh and before returning the book to the library I put a note inside asking the next reader to call me afterwards in case they needed to talk.
Any takers, or has Oprah beaten me to the punch? She did name it the number 1 book last year didn't she? That's a good thing, uh, right?

I have this sitting there waiting to be read in Thailand.. its the only book of her's I ahve left to read.. She's by far my fave author.. My first born daughter will be called Eva after Eva Luna!!
have you read the one about her daughter?? Paula. Its one of the most moving books I've read..
I loved House of Spirits too... Just wish she's write quicker... I can't wait for a new book from her :o)

I've never read a book by Allende, what's she about, and can you recmnd a good one to start with? Also are Cliff notes available and if so do you advise using them (I have a hard time w/complicated plots).

She tends to write about SOuth American countries under tyranical rule.. They tend to follow the life of one character, and are kind of magical.. Magical Realism is a phrase thats been used about her books.
My favourite is Eva Luna - About the life of Eva Luna who is ageat story teller - from birth till happiness!!!
Also good is House of Spirits which also follows the story of a young girl into woman hood.
I've never used notes to help read a book - didn;t know they existed actually, but I tend to find Allende quite an easy read and it tends to focus on one character and runs chronologically.
I love books that give me a biut of escapism, and her books certainly fit that criteria for me!!

About a Boy and High Fidelity (Nick Hornby), The Stories of Eva Luna (Allende), She's Come Undone (Wally Lamb), The Virgin Suicides (? but a great book!), and The Orchid Thief (Susan Orlean--non-fiction).
I am, unfortunately, a book junkie. I am always reading three. My floors will collapse if I buy just one more book.

My favourite of the moment: _The Perks of Being a Wallflower_ by Stephen Chbosky. Also, anything by Neal Stephenson but mostly _Cryptonomicon_ and _The Diamond Age (or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer)_. And I mustn't forget _Go Ask Alice_!
