Suggestions...availability.

Posted by jay on February 8, 2002, at 6:03:41

I think one of the criteria that could be useful in helping us determine a book or not is it's availability. Not everyone on here has access to buy books from Amazon.com, and these books can also get expensive, considering many of us are not from Amazon.com's home base in the U.S. How about ones that would be a bit easier to attain, like say at a local library?

Just a thought...

At Nikki's suggestion, I've added a link to Amazon.co.uk:

But there's still Australia and South Africa and everywhere else...

As far as cost, I know some book clubs only read books available as paperbacks...

Cost of books

Paperbacks have been getting ridiculously expensive too recently. I like the idea of books that are available from the library. Also, books that have been around for a while such as 'A Confederacy of Dunces' tend to be cheaper. I believe I already have a copy from the 25 cents pile that I never got around to reading.

I'd like to suggest that instead of eliminating books automatically based on availability we ask each person to think about how they will get the book. Find out whether it is published in your country, how much it costs or whether the library has too long a waiting list before voting for or against a particular book.

If we can generate a list at list one month ahead of time (more if possible) then people can request the book from the library.

Maybe that's better, take it case by case...

Maybe that makes sense, too. It wouldn't be possible then to pick the next book based on the discussion of the previous book, but the book *after* the next book could be picked then, and it's probably worth it to have books be available...
