I just bought the book, brought it home, and was browsing the site-and noticed I have a book that looks totally DIFFERENT!!!!
Does everyone else's look like the picture at the top...mine has a funny looking man with a chicken(I think) on his head...

Yes, mine has a bird sitting on his head too...it is an older,1987, edition trade paperback.
I was also wondering what 'wine cake' and the drink 'Dr Nut' are?
maybe i need an annotated edition, and a map of New Orleans...

I have read Confederacy of Dunces twice, and I love it. The second time was just a few months ago. There was an interesting story on NPR awhile back about a new biography of John Kenndy Toole. He had some kind of psychotic disorder in the the years before his death. He was severly mentally ill, though not at the time he wrote the book (as far as anyone knows.) Those who knew him empatically deny that Ignatius=John Toole. They say he was nothing like Ignatius and that his mother was nothing like Ignatius's mother.
Toole was gay, by the way.
His mother was responsible for getting the book published after his suicide. She bugged a lot of people to read it, notably, Walker Percy, who resisted her efforts for a long time, then was amazed when he finally read the book.
The bird on his head (on the cover of most editions of the book) is a parrot.

The library here had both versions. The one I took out is the one with I. on the cover, funny hat, etc. The one that appears up at the top of this page is a newer edition, published in 1995. What I didn't realize is that he wrote this in the what, early 60's? and his mother brought it to Percy in the late 70's, I think. Hmm..
Yep, there are a lot of cultural details, both from geography and time, that are a bit cryptic to me. But I've only read a few pages thus far.
Don't anyone give anything away just yet.....

I hope it's not giving anything away to admit I'm having trouble wading through this book. It's just not engaging my interest, although I have been wanting to read it and I voted for it. I read a page or two and just drift off. I'm beginning to doubt I'll have it read in time to discuss it. I guess that's the challenge with a book club with a number of members with mood disorders. Now if I was hypomanic again, I'd have it read, analyzed and ready with brilliant comments that would enlighten the world. I hope you all are doing better.

I'm chugging along - did fall asleep once (shame:-));
what perked me up was the first glimpse of another
world coming up - that was when Ignatius started
writing in his diary in his bedroom - that was
another place he was visiting ... so I will keep
at it ( don't know why i fell asleep at (8:30 pm -
just knocked out - i really hope i am not hypothyroid
to that extent.Up now.

I think a lot of people find the first part of the book slow. Since tastes are different, I can't absolutely promise you that you will love the book as you get more into it, but, the book is greatly beloved by many, and it does pick up.
