Voting Process

Posted by Noa on February 12, 2002, at 20:02:28

Don't know if this will work, or if it will help, but wanted to give it a try.

I made a poll at PB Open where we can vote for the 1st month's selection. I included the four books that were mentioned in the post subject lines as people's votes thus far. I know there were lots of others mentioned in all of the discussions, but it seemed like these four were the most popular because they were mentioned as votes.

Because there isn't a "bookmarks" function at PB Open, I made a folder of bookmarks at P-B-tips intstead where people can read the amazon descriptions, etc. on each book. Feel free to add more books to the folder for future reference, although hopefully, we can move this folder over to PB open where the poll is. If the poll system works, we can use it to choose future books.

Dr. Bob, could we have bookmarks at PB open?

The poll closes on Friday, per the suggestion of several people today.

Sure, let's give it a try. I'm a little nervous about it being open, though. Could someone let me know if inappropriate links start showing up?

Also, I'd like to suggest the following format for the bookmarks:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0517122707/drbobsvirte00-20

I think that way I'll get the "referral" fee. :-)

I can't find it. Could you post a link here?

Ok, but is that different than what I posted and if so how do I do that for other books?

Sure--it occurred to me that I should have done that.

I posted the link for Confederacy of Dunces in the format you gave, but I don't know how to do that for other books.

Maybe a better thing would be to have the books listed at your book recommendations site and then people could refer to that. Anyone who wants to suggest a possible book could also put in a mini review if they want, too.?? What do you think?

OK, I think I figured out how to do this. If I search Amazon via the link on this page, it then has your referral info in the url, right?

Yes, but it will take people directly there (but it's an extra step for you) if you:

1. Go all the way to the page for the book, which will have a URL like:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0891902198/qid=1013838088/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4115103-0248950

2. Find the number after "ASIN", in this case: 0891902198

3. Copy and paste it into this template:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/xxx/drbobsvirte00-20

4. Which gives you:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0891902198/drbobsvirte00-20

> Maybe a better thing would be to have the books listed at your book recommendations site and then people could refer to that. Anyone who wants to suggest a possible book could also put in a mini review if they want, too.?? What do you think?

I think you're right, but it would take some work on my part to automate that...

Please note that in the above I've changed the suggested format of links to Amazon. Thanks,

Bob
