taurine!

Posted by Christ_empowered on April 4, 2015, at 11:39:28

Just wanted to say...if you're on psych meds, consider taurine, especially if you're on AP/AAP drugs. I take at least 2 grams/day, in one dose. When I really think about it, I'll take an additional 2 grams dose, so 4 grams per day.

Anyway, you do have to take it on an empty stomach, which is rough, or is for me because I take so many things that have to be taken with food, lol. Kind of complicates things.

That said, its been good to me. I'm calmer (I also take high dose niacinamide, which works well, too, but the combo...nice...), I don't have twitches or tics (there's some indication that taurine may help w/ TD and such through some kind of action on GABA), and taurine is one of the least expensive supplements I can think. My 240 count bottle of 1 gram capsules lasts 2-4 months, and that's for less than $15.

If you google it...there are a few small studies in first episode psychosis patients using 4 grams/day taurine w/ an atypical (I'm guessing risperidone). The taurine group showed faster response to the AAP. In one, they did brain scans (way above my comprehension) that apparently showed good things happening (that's about my level of understanding of all that, lol).

Oh, yeah...vain side benefit: hair. Taurine is used by some people for help with various forms of hair loss, and to just make your existing hair better. I think it works! Not only have I been able to regrow a significant amount of hair that I thought was gone forever (I even regrew a good bit on the hair line, and that's not supposed to happen w/ anything short of surgery), my hair is now ridiculously healthy. I mean, I have girl hair, lol.

And so...yes...taurine: think about taking it.

Taurine is a great mood stabilizer. I like it.

I might try adding taurine to my supplement regimen soon. In addition to the benefits of taurine that you mentioned, there's some evidence that taurine might play a role in reducing the the toxic effect of copper in rats (Hwang et al., 1998). I haven't written about this yet here on Psycho-Babble, but when I was seen at an orthomolecular treatment center more than two years ago, they told me that my free copper was high. I didn't pay much attention to that figure until recently, when I looked up just how high my free copper percentage was and found out that it's extremely high. So, given taurine's possible role in reducing the toxic effects of copper, I might be supplementing with taurine again soon. I have tried taurine in the past and noticed a reduction in my agitation/irritability without further benefits when I took it, but it's been a while since I last took it. So, it's probably time for another trial.

hey Tomatheus,

I do hope you find taurine helpful. Its inexpensive, a lot of people seem to be able to tolerate it fairly well, and it seems to help a good number of people.

Keep us all posted, please.

Well, I took taurine for a few days. I seemed to notice improvements in my concentration at first, but then those seemed to fade, and then I noticed a worsening of my energy and a delay of my sleep phase. I stopped the taurine as of today and seem to be feeling a little better without it than I was with it. So, taurine didn't seem to be for me this time around, but it was worth trying.

Supplements are just SO frustrating with the exeption of lithium orotate.

I am not putting any more money in that!
