any advice on what kind of folic acid to take, if there even are different kinds? my pdoc said to just buy the prenatal vitamins. that was more expensive so I looked at the amount in the vitamins and it was 800 mcg so I buy those generic at CVS. is there some better quality out there that makes a difference though? seems i read about that somewhere on here once. thanks!

Metafolin (L-methylfolate) is the activated form of folic acid, so it is much more potent.

You're welcome. Another activated B vitamin worth checking out is P5P (B6).

I had three very good months on P5P, then my brain became habituated to it. That was in 2006. I still take it off and on, and it has a somewhat stimulating effect on my brain -- it just doesn't work as well for me as it did for those three good months. Another B vitamin that helped me a lot (for two weeks) is NADH, the activated form of B3. Here's an interesting article about vitamins for bipolar, schizophrenia, depression:

I shop at vitacost, cuz its cheap(ish) and you get free shipping.
I take the vitacost brand b-100, delayed release. I also take b6 and niacinamide (a form of b3) on top of that.
This is the end of the thread.
