Natural Ways of Boosting Serotonin w/out 5-HTP

Posted by Johnny Baklava on May 6, 2011, at 14:14:54

I'm exploring ways of boosting my serotonin but haven't responded will to 5-HTP or tryptophan. They both make me tired during the day if I take them in the morning and, oddly, if I take them at night I will wake up a few hours into sleep terribly awake. Is there anything else I can add to my regimen to help (B6 I believe helpsany others?)?

Johnny,

SAM-e and l-methylfolate are both said to increase the synthesis of serotonin (as well as dopamine and norepinephrine).

I would also like to add that kanna (sceletium tortuosum) and licorice root have both been found to be natural SRIs.

Thanks! I hadn't heard that about saffron. No wonder I feel so good after Indian food!

I ordered some kanna, it arrived from South Africa, I took some, it worked, I felt relief and went to sleep and when I awoke the kanna was gone from (I thought) the table. It could have been our beagle. Kanna was great. And it worked straight away.

Inositol. Supposedly boosts activity of serotonergic neurons. And it feels serotonergic.
Just wrote a post on it on the medication board if want more info.

I checked out your post. Fascinating! I had tried inositol years ago and, the few times I tried it, it made me irritable and uptight. I find, though, that several things I had taken in the past and didn't react well to I can now take and am fine. It could be because I've been off SSRIs for about five years now. Maybe my body is finally normalizing. I may give inositol another try. Anyone else have this effect with inositol, the irritability? I used to get that with tyrosine too, but not with phenylalanine.
