ayahuasca and antibuse or naltrexone...

Posted by dunkmonkey on August 23, 2010, at 15:22:09

I just started on a journey utilizing ayahuasca in a religious context to help me cure/heal depression/anxiety and a binge drinking issue. I would like to go on antibuse for a while to take the drinking question out of the equation, or naltrexone as a second alternative. I can not seem to find info on whether these drugs can be mixed. I know ayahuasca contains a powerful MAOI inhibitor and you can't take SSRI's , antihistamines or eat certain foods. Any chemically inclined brainiacs able to help me out with my question:)?

Good on you!

Ayahuasca doesn't contain any alcohol, does it?

But you'd want to be sure, and how can you find out?

I took harmine forever ago, but ahahuasca potentiates that with some tryptamine.
Harmine was nice, sort of what I imagine mescaline to be like.
Quite strong enough for me on its own without any potentaiation

What about Campral?

I would love to experiment with ayahuasca as a prosocial drug for my nights out(when I start going out again) but I'm bipolar and fear it may destabilize me.

thanks guys...

ayahuasca doesn't contain alcohol in most blends so it will probably be OK with antabuse, but I am leaning towards using naltraxone to extinguish the habit and I have no idea about this. Ayahuasca is not an opiate but it contains a unique blend of things including DMT and an MAOI. I am trying to find out if anyone has actually done this combo and it's been difficult.

Hmmm. Campral, a thought too.

morgan, from my experience I wouldn't use ayahuasca as a pro social drug to go out. The effects are intense and a lot of people purge...ie vomit or sh*t violently. Also the visions largely take place when your eyes are closed. I have heard of people using small amounts of peruvian torch to help them with social anxities and keep their drinking to a minimum but ive not tried it

What SSRI are you taking and how much? There are some that have combined MAOIs with TCA's and TCA's with SSRIs, so you may be able to take ayahuasca with an SSRI. It really all depends on how potent an MAOI ayahuasca is.

This may be of some interest to you.

It is a difficult read at times, but you might find the section on effects on MAO activity useful. It appears that higher doses of ayahuasca are more selective to MAO B than A, which may be what you are looking for. It's really going to be something you have to experiment with at your own risk. Just know the warning signs for serotonin syndrome and closely monitor how you feel if you do decide to experiment.

Do you have any interest in ibogaine?

Is ibogaine reputed to have any useful effect in people with alcohol problems?

I have found this sort of experience generally useful for providing spiritual strength on occasion, though I have no special feeling about ibogaine.
