Vitamin Supplements for Bipolar Depression

Posted by Lao Tzu on April 13, 2010, at 10:59:01

This is just a list of vitamins that have helped me for bipolar depression. I have listed them before, but to anyone new, this information may be helpful:

Vitamins C and E, Vitamin B6, B12, and B1, fish and borage oils, manganese, zinc picolinate, selenium, and P5P (form of B6).

A combination of P5P and regular B6 is more helpful.

The difficult part is establishing the correct dosages of each vitamin for your individual needs. This may take some time and patience. Start off low and gradually increase until you find a dosage you're comfortable with. Here are some daily dosages that I find comfortable for me:

Vitamin C--500mg per day
Vitamin E--200IU in the morning and 400IU at bedtime
Vitamin B6/P5P--50mg of regular B6 combined with 50mg of P5P
Vitamin B1--100mg in the morning and 100mg at bedtime
Vitamin B12--highly individual. Anywhere from 250mcg on up.
fish oil--1,500mg per day
borage oil--1,300mg per day
manganese--10mg in the morning
Zinc picolinate---highly individual. I find that 44mg per day is my target dose, but it could be more or less for you.
selenium--50mcg during the day and 200mcg at bedtime.

This is all I have to report currently. I hope this is helpful information to anyone new.

Have you tried Lithium Orotate or Lithium Aspartate?

Although I doubt that this is a common occurrence, I reacted very badly to P-5-P. It increased the severity of my bipolar depression withing hours of taking my first dose. It took about 12 hours for me to recover.

Thanks for letting us know, Scott. I'm sure some people might react badly to P5P. I've never had this experience, however. Definitely, though, I get more energy from P5P than I do from pyridoxine hcl.

No, I haven't tried lithium orotate, but I thought about it. I think the vitamin shoppe I buy from stopped selling it, but I know I could get it online. Thanks for reminding me about this great mineral. I don't know how I would react to lithium. I'm not severely depressed, so I don't know if it is absolutely necessary.

There are several potential health benefits to taking lithium that it may be a good idea for many of us to take a low dose of it regardless.

One possible benefit of Lithium

The last paragraph is interesting too.

I have Lithium Orotate and Lithium Aspartate, got them from iherb recently, although I've sustained a reasonable amount of stability for the past 3 or 4 months and I don't feel the need to experiment with it since the past 2 years have been hell. I got some Tranquil Ability herbal tincture at the same time from iherb and that was nice whilst it lasted.

I doubt one or two lithium orotate pills would ever hurt you, if anything it may help. Anyway, sounds like you had a rough year so I understand if you don't feel like trying it right now.

Here's some interesting research on lithium:
