Selenium and depression

Posted by Lao Tzu on April 14, 2010, at 10:51:23

Since I have schizophrenia, antioxidant vitamins and minerals have been very useful to me. I think selenium is a great mineral to try if you have a mental illness with a lot of oxidative stress like schizophrenia. Dosage is very important, however. For example, I've learned that the best dosage for daytime use is about 50mcg. 100mcg is too much for me for daytime usage. 50mcg works well for my depression during the daytime. In addition, I take 200mcg at bedtime for additional protection. So if you're thinking about trying selenium, I would try no more than 50mcg for daytime usage and possibly more at bedtime. Many sources say that you can take up to 300mcg per day without side effects. So far, I have no side effects from 250mcg per day. Some sources have said much higher dosages of selenium are needed for cancer, but dosages of more than 400mcg per day are said to produce side effects, so you have to be careful.

Selenium helps to bind mercury atoms, so is useful in that regard. Anyone with a history of amalgam fillings, being around a light bulb that broke (mercury inside), or just exposure to the toxic world we live in, selenium can help to protect from the damage of mercury. It won't remove it, but helps to tame it down as long as it is there. Only chelation will remove it.

Not surprisingly, one of the almost universal symptoms mercury-accumulation people share is depression, with schizophrenia and anxiety common as well. So if selenium helps someone feel better, well, you kind of have to make your own judgement what that means. It is also a very good antioxidant, along with Vit C, E, and A.

Thanks for the information, bleauberry! I do have one dental amalgam, and since I have schizophrenia, it's always possible that mercury or other toxic metals are involved somehow.

I have more than 10 mercury amalgam fillings. I can't find any concrete evidence via studies that they are bad, but since Mercury is so toxic is would seem a reasonable assumption. Also according to sources such as the FDA they refuse to state that Mercury Amalgams are safe. Perhaps this sentence sums things up >

"As of 2008, the use of dental amalgam has been banned in Norway[35], restricted in Sweden and Finland, and a committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has refused to ratify assertions of safety."

I wish I could get rid of them but it's just so expensive to do so in the UK.
