This is an interesting substance. I notice if I take it I seem to have more energy and motivation to get out of bed. No, it's not miraculous, but it helps. The thing about it is, I can't take too much of it or I have side effects I really don't like. I'm trying to take 50mg every other day. I can't take 50mg everyday, because too much of this substance makes me sluggish and that's bad for depression when you have low energy. If I take it every other day, I'm all right. It is best to take breaks with this substance because it is partially fat soluble and can build up in your tissues. But I'll say, it does help me get out of bed and take a shower in the mornings. Just be careful of your dosage and how often you take it. More is not always better with this supplement. Cheers!

In reply to Alpha Lipoic Acid, posted by Lao Tzu on March 31, 2010, at 10:59:35
Alpha lipoic acid is a potent chelator of lead and mercury. It has a halflife of 3 hours. So be aware that if you have any suspicion of accumulating metals over the years, this substance is going to stir them up and spread them around, unless you take it every 3 hours to prevent the redepositing of metals that were loosened up.
At chelation forums, it is not unusual to see people take alpha lipoic acid at doses of 2mg to 5mg every 3 hours. They work up to 50mg after weeks or months.
And of course, the symptoms of heavy metal accumulation look exactly like depression, anxiety, schizo-spectrum, and low energy. So for many of us, this could be an issue. In such cases, alpha lipoic makes sense, but should be dosed cautiously. Its halflife is extremely important. Doses every 3 hours to do it right. Otherwise risk moving metals from storage to somewhere else causing new problems.
