Does anyone have any alternative suggestions for the treatment of postherpatic neuralgia. I hate taking prescription pain meds but am really suffering.

These Substances may Alleviate Neuralgia
Alkaloids
Capsaicin (cream applied topically) may alleviate the Pain associated with Neuralgia.
Antioxidants
Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) (applied topically) may help to prevent the Neuralgia that arises as an after-effect of Herpes Zoster (Shingles).
Carbohydrates
In Japan, Chondroitin Sulfate has been utilized for the treatment of Neuralgia.
Minerals
Lithium may alleviate Neuralgia (due to its ability to stabilize Nerves). references
Magnesium may alleviate Neuralgia.Nucleic Compounds
Supplemental, exogenous Adenosine Monophosphate (AMP) (administered via injection) may alleviate the Neuralgia that occurs in association with Shingles (Herpes Zoster Virus).
Pharmaceutical Drugs
Gabapentin may alleviate the postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) that persists in some Shingles patients for several years after other symptoms have resolved.
Galanthamine may alleviate Neuralgia.Vitamins
Vitamin B1 may be an effective treatment for (the Trigeminal Neuralgia form of) Neuralgia.
The Nicotinic Acid form of Vitamin B3 (200 mg per day) may be beneficial for the treatment of (the Trigeminal Neuralgia form of)
Vitamin B12 may help to alleviate the Pain associated with the (postherpetic) associated with Shingles.
Vitamin E (1,200 - 1,600 IU per day) may reduce the Pain associated with the (postherpetic) Neuralgia associated with Shingles.
