Questions about 5-HTP

Posted by someday on March 28, 2007, at 8:52:59

I'll make it as simple as possible.

Does 5-HTP have poop-outs just as other antidepressants do? Will I have to keep increasing dosages when it stop working in order to get the same effect as the first start?

Does 5-HTP have horrible withdrawal symptoms when I discontinue just like other antidepressants do?

Inputs from your scientific knowledge or experiences are all good :)

Check out this wikipedia article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5-HTP

I take it on occasion and have had no negative side effects. It does make me drowsy at 100+ mg.

The wiki article discusses concerns about 5htp causing excess circulating seratonin in the body which could cause (theoretically) seratonin syndrome and various other physical problems. There is advice about what and what not to take it with to avoid this potential problem.

I have not heard anyone say that they experienced withdrawal from it. It acts distinctively like an SSRI to my system so I'm thinking it is possible.

Have you used Tryptophan? If so, how did it effect you? I like the feel of the 5htp, personally. Seems to be more of a mood brightener for me.

Take care,
Kaye
