ADD - natural treatments?

Posted by cindy lou on March 17, 2007, at 7:02:06

Hi,
I have crippling ADD (+ anxiety + depression.) The ADD symptoms are pretty intense, and have become worse since I've had two children -- I get overwhelmed and stressed very easily, and constantly lose track of what I was doing. I am like a hamster on a wheel, running and running and never accomplishing anything.

Long story short, is there any natural treatment for ADD that you have heard of? I have tried the stimulants, all of them. They work initially, giving me energy and motivation to get me going, but when they wear off I crash and feel horrible.

I haven't found much hope on the web, and have poked around a bit in the archives here, but may have missed something.

I can't tolerate fish oil (nausea) and am allergic to flax seed oil.

Any ideas are welcome!! Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

Cindy

Are you taking your fish oil with your largest meal of the day? What aspect of it makes it intolerable?

There's lots you can do, but it generally is a gradual process of rebalancing. I hope you have some patience left.

Dear Larry,
Thank you SO much!! This is great information! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to me!

Take care,
cindy

PS. I wasn't taking the fish oil with a meal, so maybe that explains the nausea I felt with it ... I will try again.

The special long-chain omega-3s that are in fish oil are very vulnerable to oxidation. If you take them on an empty stomach, your stomach acid will cause them to decompose, producing volatile aldehydes and ketones ---> rancid fish burps. Not pretty, eh?

If you still get a similar reaction when taking them with a meal, open up a capsule and smell it. It shouldn't smell particularly fishy. Fish oil has an odor, but it shouldn't be powerfully so. It's possibly your supply was not fresh.
