calcium supplements

Posted by philyra on February 12, 2007, at 19:55:34

I'm seeing a nutritionist who thinks I need to be taking calcium supplements. I am wary of supplements in general and try to get my nutrients from food, with the occasional vitamins once in a while, but based on my diet I see her point. What form of calcium supplements do alternative health practitioners generally recommend, does anyone know? (I'm not seeing one at the moment.) The nutritionist recommended calcium chews from Trader Joe's but I wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks!

take care,
philyra

The orthodox recommendation of Calcium is 800mg per day. Non orthodox nutritional practitioners recommend only 300mg per day. You will be able to get all the calcium you need from food. When you overload your body with calcium it actually ends up needing more and more in the long run. Your body becomes deficient in the midst of plenty. Look how the hormones Parathyroid, Calcitriol and Calcitonin work in relation to balancing calcium in the body. Then look at how much calcium is already in foods. If you are a relatively healthy person, then there's no need to supplement Calcium at all and it's actually detrimental to your health in the long run.

Thanks! That was my suspicion...I eat almost all whole foods, very little meat and cow dairy. Do you think I'm okay? (Also get plenty of weight-bearing exercise.) Can you point me in the direction of some good sources on figuring out how hormones balance calcium?
