Even though I have been off SSRI's for a significant period of time, the motivation, emotional numbess they have caused still persists abundantly. I need something to help with extreme flatness, lack of emotion, and desire. This is a serious problem and I fear ssri's have made this a permanent problem

I use to benefit from them but now I react to them in a negative way.

I have been dealing with the same crippling symptoms for 10 years. Lack of pleasure, no enjoyment, no motivation. Even in times when I wasn't depressed. It's like even those symptoms are part of the overal depression picture, they represent a distinct syndrome all by themselves. They can be there with or without depression.
I have gotten very brief responses that helped, usually in the norepinephrine/dopamine category. I've read that those are the chemicals related to pleasure and reward. But I can't ever get a sustained response past a couple days. If you haven't already, you might want to try tyrosine supplements (start low like 100mg 2X a day, while some guidelines say to take as much as 1000mg 3x day). Or DL-phenylalanine. Other than that it is just pure trial and error with various herbs. I did get a nice boost from gingko biloba which felt rather dopaminergic/noradrenergic to me. It was overly stimulating to me though and created a lot of anxiety...requiring xanax...geez.
Strange, but I took xanax for one week as an emergency for panic attacks at a company meeting with hundreds of people. During that week I had a profound increase in pleasure and motivation. I expected xanax would do just the opposite. I am benzophobic but I keep thinking about retrying it. It doesn't make sense. But heck, whatever, right?

Blueberry, when klonopin worked for me, I often got a weirdly motivating impulse from it, much as you did from xanax. Is the DL-phenylalanine that you mention the same thing as "DPLA"?
I also wonder if fish oil wouldn't be helpful, I'm giving it a go myself.

If you are off regular SSRI, you could try St John Wort 600 mg. It has a similar milder effect.
Fish oil is also good for depression.

The only thing you can count on is change. The body will heal itself if the mind (not brain) will allow it.
If you need a pick up: P5P, B12-methylcobalamin, NADH, Multi Vitamin and something causing excitement int he chronic fatigue world is "D-Ribose". Supposed to give much energy.

If you want to counteract anergic states consider taking S-adenosyl methionine which is one of the fastest natural antidepressants known to man...it is a universal methylator and will upregulate your monoamine neurotransmitter levels. You're looking at 3-4 days.
Rubidium Chloride is another powerful mineral antidepressant. 750mg/day will produce an effect comparable with tricyclics but more durable.
D-phenylalanine (not L or D/L) is a natural inhibitor of the brain enzyme carboxypeptidase A which otherwise breaks down your natural enkephalins. Taking 500-1000mg a day over a few weeks can produce a mild narcotic antidepressant and painkilling effect. But you would have to order it from Vitafit in Newzealand...
CDP-Choline (250mg), like NADH (5mg) can increase tyrosine hydroxylase activity and hence Dopamine (the antistress chemical) manufacture and produce a nice antidepressant effect....
Your are looking essentially to increase dopamine tone in the pleasure-reward circuit of the brain called the mesolimbic area and all these nutrients will do that to a greater or lesser extent
Happy hunting...

Do you have a good brand for SAMe? I've read that it's hard to manufacture and most of the stuff on the shelves is poor quality.

Welcome! But please don't use this site to exchange information that could be used to import into the US prescription medication without a prescription.
And please don't take this personally, either, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.
If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, please first see the FAQ:

Dr. Bob's policy is that if a site *could* be used to illegally import prescription drugs, any link to it is forbidden. I've seen people blocked for it.
