I have not read anywhere about insomnia as a side effect of 5-HTP.
I am taking 50 mg in the morning, 50 mg at bedtime. This is my second time trying 5-HTP, and both times I have had an elevated mood and insomnia. I have a bipolar diagnosis, and I suspect it is bringing on hypomania. I would love to see if I could keep the good mood and get some sleep, hopefully keeping the cycling at bay.
Has anyone had this side effect, and have you done anything, or taken anything else to counteract this side effect?
I have tried taking a lower dose (25-50 mg a day in the morning) with the help of a nutritionist, but it doesn't seem to hold my mood up for very long.
I'm assuming this is going to be like an SSRI for me -- elevates my mood, but causes me to cycle up and then down.

Try adding lithium orotate to it? I've been studying it a lot as a natural option for myself, and it seems a little more than half the people who try it get real good results, mostly the bipolar ones.
This is the end of the thread.
