I know what you are saying, I get some of this effect too.
I think that serotonin and melatonin work on a ying yang system. If serotonin gets too high then it supresses melatonin release.
You could try taking it right in the morning.
Perhaps with some melatonin at night ?

I'm not an expert on 5 HTP but anything I've read suggests taking 100mg twice a day. That is the dose I followed when I use to take it. I can't imagine how I'd feel taking it every few hours.

Serotonin production during the day enhances melatonin production at night, but I am guessing that if it is taken too late at night you could run into problems.
If you were in canada, I'd recomend an OTC drug called periactin, it blocks certain serotonin receptors and facilitates sleep. I have combined 5-htp with periactin with some sucess.
