I really want to try this stuff called "Sleep 'n Restore" from the Health food store INSTEAD of the Restoril I am on. My PA says 'no", but he says that to all herbs as I think he is just not experienced with them and there *is* a lot of bad press about them. Here is what is in the stuff:
30IU E
3mg Melatonin
100mg Valerian root 5:1 extract
800 mg Glutamine
25mg Grape seed extract. So, what do YOU think? Can I try it anyway? Are you aware of any risks with any of these ingredients? (I am also taking, and will continue these: Lamictal, Geodon, Synthroid, E,C,B,garlic, Actos)
TIA !

> maryMelatonin may be problematical for depression. From a naturopathic site: http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T77232.html
"Not recommended for: Depression
On the basis of theoretical ideas about how melatonin works, some authorities specifically recommend against using it for depression, schizophrenia, autoimmune diseases and other serious illnesses, and in pregnant or nursing women.
Some studies showing melatonin to be an effective treatment for depression were flawed. Melatonin is unlikely to produce significant positive effects in the treatment of depression in most patients, especially if the patient is not already melatonin-deficient. Badly timed use of melatonin can worsen depression. However, some patients with SAD (seasonal affective disorder, a form of depression associated with the shortening of the days in autumn and winter) have been shown to have disrupted melatonin cycles, and have been treated effectively with light therapy."
In my own experience, it's ok for a few nights but then can make depression worse. For me also, 3 mg would be too much, but I know others consider that a routine amount.
I have also had problems with another ingredient in your combo, glutamine, FWIW. I've tried it only a couple times, with the first of 500 mg being ok. But when I tried it again and took more than that I felt awful. Perhaps in combination with those others, it would be different.
In general, I tend to avoid commercial combinations in favor of taking the ingredients together myself. Then I can also experiment with taking something back out if I haven't liked the effect.

I thought glutamine was stimulatory? No experience myself, and it might possibly have to do with whether it gets into the glutamate receptor or whatever (I have no idea).
See if you can get hold of skullcap. Better for people with depression than valerian, so they say. You have herbalists where you are?

I wouldn't do it. Way too much melatonin. Better listen to the doc on this one.

Seroctin or Pycnogenol might help

> maryThis is no help but to say its very individual. I have found that glutamine can help with anxiety. People tout magnesium here all the time but I have never felt anything from it.
