The President’s Desk
Mourning Our Colleague and Friend; CarnoSee™ Update
Rob Watson

I am sad to report that we at Vitamin Research Products—as well as nutritional supplement users everywhere—have lost one of the industry’s most cherished and knowledgeable advocates. In late January, James South, our colleague and friend, passed away from a brain tumor after enduring an all-too-short battle with this disease.

James was a frequent contributor to Vitamin Research News and as Director of Research and Development was instrumental in formulating many of our products. He will be deeply missed by all of us at VRP, as well as by the thousands of people he touched with his immense knowledge. A 37-year veteran of the nutritional supplement industry, he accumulated a vast amount of knowledge, earning him the high regard of everyone who knew him. His contributions during his years at Vitamin Research Products will live on in our product line, strengthening the health of people all over the world.

I am working with James’s wife Ann to create a James South memorial website to continue his health-related legacy. Watch for announcements of this in the future.

FDA Bans CarnoSee™
As the author of many of the Health Freedom articles on VRP’s website and a passionate defender of supplement users’ rights, James would likely have shared our frustration about a recent development that now prohibits us from selling CarnoSee eye drops. Many of you used this popular, safe and effective product and were surprised to discover it is no longer part of our product line. However, our hands our tied, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prohibited the over-the-counter sale of n-acetyl L-carnosine-containing eye drops after declaring this ingredient a new drug. We will diligently work to formulate or find a suitable, scientifically valid replacement, if one exists.

Sorry to hear of his death :(

Kava Kava banned
Trytophan banned
n-acetyl L-carnosine banned

What do all these have in common? They all work to treat various conditions. So the drug companies get them banned since many members of the FDA have interests in pharmaceutical companies.

If I said that agrees with my cynical thinking.. but that would be a put down right? LOL

I read somwhere .. not sure if true that the FDA said tryptophan may compete with the marketing of some SSRI.. and that would be detrimental to the US, right? (if true)..about 4 days or something difference in timing of approval of his SSRI and banning of tyrptophan at the time? Merely a unfortunate unforeseen coincidence :) But I do have a bad memory..and I might have misread it too or dreamt it?

There aint no such thing as corruption .. ask people in politics:-)) (preferably those who have retired from the scene)
Still its good to see it's an enduring trait across all countries, races, times.. something in common, so there must be a positive somewhere in it :)

Jan

I think its just the eye drops re n-acetyl L-carnosine. They were reportedly very effective. I was looking at trying them sometime but was waiting until I heard some more on them :)

Here's some studies :) >

Babizhayev, M. A., et al. The natural histidine-containing dipeptide Nalpha-acetylcarnosine as an antioxidant for ophthalmic use. Biochemistry. 65(5):588-598, 2000.

Babizhayev, M. A., et al. N-Acetylcarnosine, a natural histidine-containing dipeptide, as a potent ophthalmic drug in treatment of human cataracts. Peptides. 22(6):979-994, 2001.

Wang, A. M., et al. Medical application of carnosine. Department of Biochemistry and Department of Neurobiology, Harbin Medical University, Harbin 150086, PR China.

Eye drops containing 20 mM (approximately 425 mg) carnosine were used to treat patients aged 48 - 60 years with various degrees of eyesight impairment but without symptoms of cataract. The course of treatment is from 2 to 6 months. The results demonstrate that carnosine appears to alleviate eye tiredness and comparatively improve eyesight (obviously improve eyesight, giving more clear vision). Subjects reported that carnosine could brighten and relax their eyes.

Hi All. I remember reading James South's nutrient programme. There were a lot of smart drugs in there, and then he dies of a brain tumour?? Well well. Don't want to live forever anyway, hey? But he took lots.

Sad news. It reminds me of a friend of mine who died of a brain tumor last year. She was probably the most healthy person I knew, ran maranthons and was a vegetarian.

warm regards ~Jake

Hi Declan,
Good to see your back from that ban!

Yes I did think of that too.. I wonder how old he was. If he was over 90, it's probably OK :-)

Now TJ has just emailed me that hew was banned..so I was forced back to that dreaded board and posted too.. except this time I expressed a few of my thoughts.. which,as you proabably know by now kinda agree with yours :-)
..only I gave up following the detail of US politics a couple of years ago in digust as all I was doing was upsetting myself!!! There ARE other places in the world!!.. or at least there are at present...
I appreciated being able to keep in touch and hearing you were OK during your ban too.

I don't think I'll be spending as much time here anymore, and won't be as active. I've been tapering off for a long whoile now.

I'm definitely NOT venturing onto the politics or admin board.
I've strengthened my resolve to only look here.. no matter WHO is affected from now on, even replied to my comments!
Hey, you could even tell me Bush had dropped into and posted on the politics board,...and I'm NOT going to look ;-)

Kind regards,
Jan

Hi Jan
I saw a picture of James South and he didn't look at all old, by which I mean he was around my age. I havn't been to Politics and thought I wouldn't. I've been quite disgusted enough with NSW politics and (now that I'm here) Tasmanian politics for the moment without getting myself into a tangle about anywhere else. But now that I'm curious about TJ, I'm off there to see.
