Prozac and Tyrosine?

Posted by john berk on January 30, 2006, at 0:41:58

Hey guys, i know many folks take prozac augmented by wellbutrin, but will i get some of the same benefits with Tyrosine, the amino acid, i have been adding 500mgs. in the morning, same noon, to low dose prozac!! hope this isn't too much of an alternative question, but i was offered wellbutrin by my pdoc, i seem to be getting some added energy from tyrosine!! i would prefer for finacial reasons, to stay with one AD.

Is this a safe combo, also klonopin, 2 mgs. daily...john!!

Tyrosine seems like an interesting idea, I have read much about it and in fact have a book near me with information on it.

I would be wary about mixing some herbal things with ADs or neuroleptics if the herb is sedating such as valerian or kava. I had a very nasty experience with seroquel and kava a few years ago. Don't mix those two things whatever you do.

Also, are you really getting the brand name Klonopin? I wish I had the brand name instead of this weird generic.

Hi, Thanks for your reply!!
i had a bad expeirence with valerian 5 years ago, it actually was what i was taking for sleep when i went into a major depression, literally overnight!! i don't mess with kava or valerian at all. no, actually i only took brand klonopin for a year, i am now on generic, they seem the same, but friends have told me they notice a difference in their expeirence with it...john

John I have tyrosine an thought it was supposed to be good for lowering anxiety. Am I wrong or right I don't know. Don't always take it as I feel it might make me tireder than I already am. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa, how are you?
the owner of the health food store i purchased it at said it was relaxing, but it does effect dopamine to an extent, and for me, if i take it on an empty stomch before breakfast, i feel like i had 2 cups of coffee, really energizing, i suppose it can work differently in each of us, but i have always felt energy from it, give it a try with a cup of coffee, i think they are synergistic, working well together, your friend...john

John so you don't have anxiety at all? I can imagine what a cup of coffee and a stimulant would do to me! Unless it gives you a paradoxical effect. But then maybe it counteracts the lethargy that some AD's and benzos give you. Got to think about that one. But thanks John you are always such a tremendous help!!!!Fondly, Phillipa

I would think prozac and tyrosine would go real well together. I was on prozac for years so I'm familiar with it. Tyrosine has been one of the things I've sampled recently. I personally would much rather try adding tyrosine or dlpa to prozac before trying wellbutrin. I mean, at least your body recognizes them as natural food substances and knows how to deal with them better than foreign drug molecules.

Tyrosine does feel good to me, but it had some problems. It felt best the first day. Depression almost totally vanished, good energy, good interest, good motivation, but not overstimulated or anxious. But then the second day it wasn't as good, almost like the dopamine receptors had already developed tolerance to the extra dopamine floating around. And then I experienced these minicrashes as the doses wore off, similar to let-down after ritalin or adderall. Even though the goodness and stimulation mellowed out very quickly for me, I did notice that beginning on the second day there was a decent anti-anxiety effect in combination with increased energy, which was an interesting combination.

Right now I'm sampling DLPA and I think I like it better because it feels similar to tyrosine except it seems much longer lasting and doesn't have the wearing off crashes.

Hi Phillipa,
oddly enough, not much anxiety, even though i take klonopin, but that is more for my ocd.
the tyrosine seems to give me a lift, and i feel more endurance while walking and running!!
thanks for your nice comments, your friend...john

hi blueberry
i agree, alternative boosts like tyrosine, dlpa, or phenylanine are better , [for me] than adding wellbutrin, not only finacially, but with klonopin, [clonazepam] i want to try to avoid too many pharm meds if possible!!
Y ou know, today was the first day i noticed a slight "crash" at noon after my morning tyrosine, i took another 500mgs., felt better, but not like saturday, when i was on the move all day, non-stop!!
i'll take it one day at a time, maybe look into nadh again!! good luck with the DLPA, take care...john
