Why do I feel calmer if I stay up all night?

Posted by MM on October 19, 2005, at 6:15:49

I know it's supposed to be awful for bipolars to stay up all night but when I'm awake from morning until night I have increased anxiety and worry. Why does staying up calm me and help me think more clearly? I do have more energy during the time I'm awake when I stay up so maybe that's not supposed to be good, but I like not feeling hungover for most of the day. Any thoughts? I've never been a sunny day person (I kind of hate them) and I love rain.

Maybe the lack of sleep switches you into a slightly hypomanic mode where you just feel better in general. I often feel my best between 2am and 6am... that is, most relaxed. I think it might be cuz cortisol levels are lowest then. But I guess you're not talking about that time, you're talking about effects into the next day.

Well, if I go to sleep around 3-4 am I usually have a better day when I wake up, so maybe the low cortisol levels at that time help me sleep or something. It makes me wonder why being a little hypomanic would make me calmer and if that's such a bad thing, and why the sun makes me feel so sucky.

your body produces more endorphins and they bind to the mu opiod receptor because without sleep the body senses it is stressed. during stress, endorphins bind to the mu opioid receptor, gaba may increase as well.

You can find lots of information by searching "sleep deprivation depression" in web search engines and Pubmed.

Sleep deprivation therapy was researched quite a lot in the 1970's but was largely abandoned when new drugs were invented, maybe to have a rediscovery of it nowadays?

Most antidepressants work through their effects on sleep parameters. Most AD's decrease rem sleep. Decreasing rem sleep alters the sensitivity of the d2 receptors as do the tricyclics and other AD's

There are a number of doctors who still treat depression solely through sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation also increases hippocampal serotonin content which lasts many days after the sleep deprivation.

I think that most AD's are just mimicking sleep deprivation.

I think it is worth research. For myself, the antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation is unparalelled by the fanciest and most advanced antidepressant therapies at their highest doses.
