Fish oil is better » gardenergirl

There's great little book on flax seed oil by Donald O. Rudin called Omega 3 Oils: A Practical Guide. It totes flax oil as the cure for many modern conditions (cardiovascular health, emotional disorders, immune disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, joint and muscle problems, skin problems, and urinary tract problems). However, the people in his study were all taking, I believe, like, cups of flax oil to get these results. I took a 1-2 tablespoons of flax oil a day for several months and the only thing I noticed was a slight benefit for my skin (less dry). It did not affect my anxiety or depression at all. Also, for men, there was a study associating flax seed oil intake with testicular cancer, so...I had to stop taking it. Anyway, there's also something about the way the chains bond in flax versus fish oil--fish oil has longer omega 3 chains, I think, and this is better for the brain. I'm sure others here can explain it better. But from experience, I know that fish oil does provide anti-depressant relief while flax oil, for me, at least, did not.

Good luck,
Chris

Flax oil won't clog your arteries. It can create oxidative stress, though, if you take lots of it, and are deficient in vitamin E. If you're taking polyunstaturated fatty acids, you should take vitamin E.

There is a vegetarian substitute for fish oils that is far far better for you than this flax oil. It's called Neuromins, and it's sold by a number of American companies, under license from the producer. It's a good source of DHA, the longer omega-3 found in fish oil. Ultimately, the reason fish are high in omega-3s is because the ocean food chain is based on algae.

Thanks for your concern, and I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner....

I'm spread pretty thin. I take on more than I can handle, or at least, I can barely handle what I take on.

I just did an advocacy case, assisting a guy at a social services hearing. He could have been charged by the police (fraud), but I was able to guide him (and the investigator) towards accepting his confession and explanation that he didn't know he was doing anything wrong. Not only did I save him from charges and having his benefits cut off, I got him $1500 bucks towards moving expenses/rent deposit, even though he was only eligible for $500. The hearing was two hours long, all kinds of evidence and sworn statements....it's a lot of work. Anyway. Thanks for asking, as I said. In February, I was swirling the drain. Feels good to be bouncing back.
