Hi,
I've been reading all this bs on the internet about how lithium orotate is just as effective as lithium carbonate but with far less side-effects.. I had a great response to lithium carbonate but couldnt handle the cognitive problems... anyone actually have sucess on lithium orotate?

I think its kind of bull to me. I think the big deal with lithium orotate is that it can be had without a prescription. It is in low enough dose not to be considered a drug.
I've seen no clinical trials of it used in psychiatry.

I believe there is a poster called Barbaracat who uses lithium orotate, and I seem to recall that there was another who had tried it as well. You can do a search in the archives to perhaps find out about Barbaracat's experience. The other poster who had used it was Loops I believe. Just type lithium orotate in the PB google search engine and you should find some old threads (that is if I am remembering correctly).

The academic pdoc I see told me that he suspects that lithium's cognitive side effects are due to its influence upon ADH (anti-duiretic hormone).. Now, if this bs that they say about the transporter is true, then hopefully serum levels will be lower and effect the kidney cells less..
One more thing in support of lithium orotate, magnesium, often used in cardiovasular illness, is administered in the orotate form, to apparently, help transportation..
just some optimistic thoughts

I think the cognative side effects are due to the general action of lithium. Inhibiting PKC lowers CREB and dampens overall nerve activity.
CREB enhancers have been shown to improve general cognition, so I would suspect that the opposite would decrease cognition.
I think the general feeling of dumbness it induces (I hate that feeling so much) is part of the antimanic effects of the drug.
I have not found a mood stabalizer that does not make you very dumb.

To simplify the above question: will lithium orotate have any sort of effect? because I'd hate to be left very depressed.. or shall i just stick to regular lithium carbonate?

I am on Epilim (Depakote for you American folk) and I do not feel that it makes me "dumb". I dont think it has any effect on my cognition.
Now, when i was on lithium, I could barely remember anything and felt so out of it.
That being said, I have a friend who is bipolar and on Lithium and is at the top of her class in University studying Law so I do think its an indvidual thing.

Actually I think that Barbarcat tried it but it didn't work well for her and she went back to prescription lithium. I think you're right that LOOPS likes it and last I knew Larry was trying it out too. Don't know if he stayed with it though.

I have been taking lithium orotate for the past year and have had good results. It seems to act best, in my case, in controling my manic episodes. I did well on depakote but hated the side effects. Also, being an uninsured working american, I like that it is cheap - about $13 a month. The only side effect that I have had is that I don't remember my dreams other than that I give it a thumbs up.

I started on 360 mgs. (3x120mgs). I find now that one 120 mgs. does me fine. I take it before bed. You may need to toy with the dose to find what works for you. I get it online from www.vrp.com

Hi -
yes I was taking it for quite awhile (3 x 120mg/day) - I found it worked quite well combined with st johns wort (I am mildly bipolar with strong anxiety issues).
I'm not taking it at present as I'm still seeing how far fish oil/epo will take me in recovery and don't want to complicate matters with anything else.
I would say it's pretty harmless, but does work as I remember feeling about 100% better after my first dose of this with the sjw(I had been having really awful mood swings for a few months with lots of crying fits). It wasn't enough over the long term to calm me down though, and I would still get bouts of anxiety. Also, after awhile I felt a bit sluggish and motivation went down a bit - but if general mood-swings/emotional imbalance is a real problem this can be a lifesaver. It got me through a very rough patch and definitely evened things out emotionally.
