Anyone here ever mixed SJW with and SSRI?

Posted by KaraS on January 11, 2005, at 14:57:51

I'm thinking of a small amount of an SSRI or SNRI (like maybe 75 mg. of Effexor) with a some SJW. Is the risk in mixing them because of serotonin syndrome or something else?

Kara,
I'm hesitant to post anything because reactions differ so much, especially with me. I've mixed SJW with Celexa and it improved antidepressant effect for a few days then wore off. I used Perika. I've always had a problem getting long-term efficacy from SJW. But others have had better results, maybe I needed to increase the dosage. I need to do a longer trial to see if SJW is a good augmenter (is that a word?)

Hi J,

Thanks for your response. Do you mind if I ask what dosages of each you took? It's good to know that it wasn't dangerous to mix them but maybe you were at low doses of each. Also, have you taken SJW by itself? I tried the Perika brand and it made me feel really sick. I think I can tolerate some other brands though.

Take care,
K

I mixed 900mg SJW 0.3 hypericin,no hyporforin, with 10mg Paxil with no adverse effects.

Kara,

It has been a while so I am just relying on memory. I believe I was taking 20 mg Celexa once daily and the 300 mg Perika tablet twice daily. This was for about a month. I never had any serotonin syndrome-like symptoms. I noticed an increased sensitivity to sunlight but it wasn't a big problem. It seemed to help boost the AD effect of the Celexa off and on. At one time I tried SJW by it itself and it just didn't have enough kick to help much with my depression. I've read that it's very popular in Germany, and there they have a pharmaceutical grade SJW that's available by prescription. Part of the problem in the US is that with herbs and vitimins we never know for sure what we are getting. If you try it let me know how it works for you. good luck~

Jake

Hi Jake,
Thanks for your response. It seems that it is safe to combine the two as long as you're not on high dosages of either one. I was under the impression that the SJW prescribed in Germany is Kira (called Jarsin there) and another brand and that they are comparable to some of the better brands here (like Perika, HBC Protocols etc.) I would be interested in seeing a comparison.

Take care,
Kara

There might be some good information here:

Perika is called Neuroplant in Germany.
