flax-seed supplementation making me wired

Posted by justplainflakey on December 11, 2004, at 13:15:59

does anyone know if flax-seed supplementation can make you wired? I've been taking it for about 6 weeks, and have been wired and had insomnia for that time. Could it be interacting with abilify? I'm thinking of tapering my dose and quitting. Please help.

Hi -

I have the same problem with flax, but not fish oil. Generally the EPA in fish oil is more calming, and this is what I have found. Yes, the flax could be contributing to your insomnia (see Mindboosters.com - Ray Sahelian talks about how too much flax oil gives him insomnia). Remember the body has to make EPA/DHA out of the ALA in flax, and not everybody can do this well enough.

That sounds possible to me, about the flax oil vs fish oil, as I have found that my days are more relaxed after a meal of salmon the evening before. I had tried the fish oil caps before the flax seed, but they left a disturbing residual fishy-oily taste/feel in my mouth. I was actually doing pretty well before the flax seed, so I am going to try discontinuing it.

Hi -

yes this is very odd about the fish taste, as a lot of people report this, but I myself have never had that.

What brand of fish oil were you taking?? I have heard that the capsules/oil should not really smell of anything if it is fresh/not rancid. I even take them on an empty stomach - no problems. Try opening the bottle, and if it smells fishy it is probably rancid.

I'm about to try out twinlabs high potency bottled fish oil instead of the NOW capsules I'm taking to save cost a bit.

I have also found on days when I'm a little too 'up' (heavens, never thought that one would happen!), I take a lecithin liquid capsule (triple strength) and this calms me right down. Don't take too much though, or it makes me too much the other way (depressed).

Thanks for the tip, I've tried Rexall and Spring Valley brands and maybe TwinLabs too, but I'm not sure. Since I have had so much trouble with the oil caps, I've been tring to incorporate more fish in my diet.

Just for information, I had read that it is important that EPA and DHA (fish oil) supplements include Vitamin E to prevent rancidity, and that supplements be taken with extra vitamin E supplements to prevent oxidation in the body. I further read that some of the conflicting studies using fish oil may be due to the fact that, in some cases, the supplements did not contain any vitamin E to protect them. Apparently, study results have been superior when EPA has been consumed with a vitamin E supplement.
