Probably the Parnate and Marplan (at least for me they did) have sexual side effects. My depression is so bad I do not care much about that at least not at first. It is when I am feeling better because of the Parnate/Marplan that I feel like I want to have a sex life. Dam*** if you do and if you don't.

He contends it was not approved because there was not a large enough market for it. Anyway he would have first hand knowledge of it all.

>Hi Irene,
Its been a while since I've done any reading about DHEA and my bookmarks were lost in the Great Hard Drive Crash of '04. I do know that it is a hormone that your body produces that is sort of a precursor to other horones, such as testosterone. So your question has prompted me to google the subject once again. Lo and behold, the results of a recent NIMH study about DHEA for depression that I had read about are now available. Check out this link:
http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/p040701b.html
The article states, "Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) replacement therapy may be efficacious in treating mild-to-moderate midlife depression, particularly where traditional antidepressant treatment has failed, is undesired by the patient or is not well tolerated, an expert in behavioral endocrinology reported in March."
A previous study showed the most significant improvement was seen in symptoms of anhedonia, such as loss of energy, lack of motivation, emotional "numbness," sadness, inability to cope and worry. When I was taking DHEA, I had only one troublesome side effect, and that was an increase in acne. Not really an issue since it is easy to treat on one's face. But those pesky eruptions that began showing up on my back were another story.
I began taking DHEA in addition to my daily dose of moclobemide around the same time I started an exercise progam with a personal trainer. The results were pretty remarkable. My trainer was amazed at the changes in me. Unfortunately, I stopped the trainer ($$$) , then the exercise, and eventually the DHEA because of the acne. It would be interesting to see what the results of restarting DHEA and exercise would be now that I've stopped the moclobemide. Maybe I'll try that before beginning any new AD. Ugh, it would be so much easier to take a pill than get back on that eliptical gym gizmo again.
Thanks for the offer about moclobemide. If I wind up back on it again, I might hit you up for some info. Basically, my pdoc was looking for meds he could use to augment it. When Roche in Canada refused to give him any information he sort of freaked about prescribing it anymore. Another pdoc in another city started the prescription for me before I moved.
Best to you all,
Mark
