does low stomach acid have an effect with fish oil

Posted by mako on August 1, 2004, at 19:47:07

In the past I have tried to use Fish oil suppliments to treat my anxiet attacks and mild obsessions. Unfortunatley I have had no positive effects. However I found that so many people have had a positive experiance with fish, which leaves me wondering why I dont have such luck. Is there any possibility that my low stomach acid could be effected by this.

Low stomach acid would increase assimilation of fats like fish oil, but it will certainly have an adverse effect on protein digestion and B12 uptake. In one of those interesting quirks of nature, one of the causes of low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) is also one of the effects....vitamin B12 deficiency. In other words, you can get into a vicious circle effect, being unable to absorb B12 from food because you didn't absorb B12 from food.

Bromelain, B12 supplements, and trimethylglycine will help to improve the low acid condition. You also need to ensure that you get enough magnesium, along with zinc and selenium, with a general B complex.
