does SAMe effect serotonin ??

Posted by linkadge on August 3, 2004, at 17:07:36

I've heard that the main effect of SAMe was on dopamine. Does SAMe have any effect on serotonin ??

I tried SAM-E once, I am also taking effexor. The SAM-E made me extremely ill, I don't know if it had anything to do with being on effexor at the sam time.
I have found emulsified fish oil works for me - I had stomach trouble on the regular capsules and the emulsified type helps with that a lot.
Anyone experience the same?

I got symptoms of serotonin snydrome when combining SAMe and antidepressants. I got very ill too. This is what lead me to think that SAME effects serotonin.

Linkadge,
I think Larry addressed all that in previous
post(s). Try a search.

No sorry. I just remember that he gave us a lot of info on SAM-e. I'll try the search myself since I want to find out more about TMG. I'll get back to you if I find what you're interested in here.

Ironically I found the following post that you made to Larry telling him about SAM-e and serotonin:

I rememeber writing this after reading an article. I have read some reports that say it affects both serotonin and dopamine, and other reports that say it only affects dopamine.

Now I am not sure which to believe :)

Thanks for explaining. (I thought you were starting to lose it - like me!)

Oh don't get me wrong, I am starting to loose it.

I am only 21 and the different meds over the course of the year I have tried have certainly dammaged my brain.

Sometimes I read some of my posts and I am saying to myself, man this guy sounds pretty smart, and then I see my name at the bottom, and I say to myself man I have deteriorated - I can't even understand half the words this "linkage" guy uses ??

I've never found a clear answer, honestly. There are two methylation reactions among the major neurotransmitters. The conversion of norepinephrine to epinephrine and the conversion of serotonin to melatonin. As both are "downstream" events, I have trouble understanding the link to serotonin syndrome.

SAMe also methylates DNA, an essential part of the replication to RNA, and all that ensues. But that takes time, days if not weeks, for the effects to be obvious.

I'd happily listen to ideas, if anybody has any.
