Book called Yoga for Depression

Posted by Ilene on January 14, 2004, at 16:29:44

Has anyone heard of this book?

"Yoga for Depression"

(Let's see if those double-double quotes work.)

Has anyone tried it? I've done yoga off and on for a couple of years, but it didn't perform miracles.

I read several articles on this topic recently. However, I have not read the book you mentioned.
The articles contained anecdotal evidence of alleviating symptoms of depression, and one was written by an M.D. as his personal experience.

In your yoga practice, did you have a teacher that emphasized the mind-body-spirit connection? As you probably know, some do that more than others, and I think the ones that emphasize that (at least from the articles I read) would be best for alleviating depression, or creating inner calm and a sense of peace.

Some of the teachers emphasized the mind-body-spirit connection more than others. I actually liked those the least. My favorite teacher was grounded in the here-and-now. I had one teacher who claimed one of her "exercises" (I think it was something she made up) would alleviate depression. I found that incredibly irritating. I think she was clueless as to the nature of true depression.

I used to feel much more serene after my yoga sessions, but now that I'm extremely anxious I often can't even go to class. I can't do the poses I used to do, and being in a room full of strangers is difficult. One of the meds I take causes orthostatic hypotension, which means I can get lightheaded if I go from a sitting or lying position to standing, so I get very nervous doing sun salutes. I'm also sick so often that I can't go to class regularly.

Regular exercise, when I could do it, didn't help my depression either.

I'd buy the book if I knew there was more than anecdotal evidence behind it. I was doing much better when I went to yoga regularly.

Thanks for the feedback.

I.

Ilene -

In support of your anecdote, I would like to post that I went to yoga classes while pregnant to alleviate physical discomfort - and found that it eased my pre-partum depression as well. Perhaps you could discuss your physical limitations (being unable to go quickly from sitting to standing) with your yoga instructor. I found that mine was very willing to accomodate limitations that different students had because of their stages of prg., for instance. Anyway, thanks for your post. It reminded me that yoga can help!

Most (not all) of the teachers are accomodating, but whatever is wrong with my arms, for example, doesn't get much better with practice. I've gotten extremely self-conscious about my inability to do down dog. (I used to be a little better at it, but I stopped yoga for a few months and lost what ability I had.)

If the studio is open today I'm going to try a drop-in class. (The neighborhood is coated in ice.) I'll take some Klonopin beforehand.

I have a condition called neurally mediated hypotension. If I get overheated or overexert myself I trigger my chronic fatigue symptoms. If it's hot I ask the instructor to turn on the AC because I'm heat-sensitive due to a medical condition The notably unaccomodating teacher responded to my request with a long spiel about how she lived in a house without AC and she had just had a baby and did yoga while pregnant and blah blah. So much for yoga and spiritual values.
