> I started taking SAMe, and the last two days, mainly today, I feel this almost uncontrollable anger, it is scary. The only other time in my life I felt like this was when I took Wellbutrin. I just learned that these two don't just work on serotonin, but dopamine as well. I rather be depressed than be such an angry crazy woman, and I was so excited to try this stuff. :( Does anyone know of anything herbal, or anything else natural that raises neuroepinephrine and serotonin, and not dopamine? I can't live with myself being like this to others for a second, but want to try something else to go with the 5-htp which alone isn't enough, and I feel it may be more than just serotonin. (Tried many other anti-depressants, but gained too much weight!) Thanks everyone, and anyone! Andie

Are you supplementing with magnesium? Before I did that, tyrosine made me feel that way...now it feels good. Wellbutrin also made me feel mean and savage (before magnesium).
TMG, which acts similarly to SAMe, also causes irritability in me now if I don't also take enough magnesium.
Magnesium malate and glycinate is what I've taken and prefer, though I've heard that mg taurate is good too.
TMG is something you might want to try, or L-phenylalanine or DLPA. Or St. John's Wort.
Lots of info on this Alternative board if you check some previous discussions or search the archives.

Oh thanks! I actually bought some l-tyrosine (is that the precursor to l-phenylalanine?) not long ago, so maybe I can take tbat tomorrow. I also have calcium magnesium (no calcium on its own, does that matter?)
I will check out the alternative board too.
Thanks!

Here's an overview of the process. http://www.mind-boosters.com/chapter_13.html
Has the SAMe been working for a while and then started making you irritable? Are you already taking B6, B12 and folate? See this post for some good info re someone else's experience: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20030402/msgs/216302.html
See this post re taking B vitamins with SAMe: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20020416/msgs/103466.html
Magnesium makes a difference for me in whether tyrosine and TMG make me irritable. It was also someone else's experience with TMG, which is why I suggested it. But your situation may be different or more complicated than that.
>I also have calcium magnesium (no calcium on its own, does that matter?)
Yes, it might. What kind of magnesium is in your cal/mag combo? Magnesium oxide is pretty typical, in which case you're not actually getting much magnesuim. Magnesium oxide is not very absorbable but is cheap which is why you see it so often in combos and multis. To really see if magnesium might help with that irritability, I'd suggest taking a more absorbable type separately and with the SAMe.

13:36:50I used SAMe for a while, and noticed a direct correlation with
increased anger and irritability, notably increased agression
towards other people. From what I have read, SAME is a mainly a dopaminergic med,
like Wellbutrin, this may increase anger, and irritability in some.
You may respond better to an SSRI like I did.

Thank you so much. I wanted to know if anyone else went
through it, or was I imagining. But it was too scary to be
coincidence, I rarely feel that angry or mean!
Can I ask you, what did you change to for an SSRI? I am trying
to stay with herbals or aminos because of weight gain.
Thanks!----

For a while I took a small dose of celexa, 10 mg, and then I
augmented it with, folic acid 1mg and plenty of omega 3. This
combination worked very well.I had moderate sucess with st. johns wort.
Sometimes, a combination of the pharmacudicals and
nutritional/herbal approach will yeild the best results. Too many
people take medication while neglecting their diet. On the same
hand, medication certainly dose have efficacy, although it's good
to know your meds so you don't get tossed around.Best of luck
