Hi:
I'd like to try Fish Oil. I have Bipolar NOS/social anxiety/adult ADHD. I've taken every med known to man since '97 and I'm sick of the roller-coaster. My cousin, who has a much more severe form of bipolar than I, just told me today that she has never felt as stable and functional as she does from Omega 3. She takes Solgar MaxEPA; every TWO softgels contain 600mg Total Omega 3, comprised of 360mg EPA & 240mg DHA. She takes 10 softgels daily, so that's 3g total Omega-3 (1800mg EPA + 1200mg DHA). I happen to already own a bottle of that same brand that I bought a year ago but never ended up using. However, I also just found 2 other brands on the web that sound like they might be better, especially if it is true that the more EPA the better: 1) Omegabrite (formulated by Dr. Andrew Stoll who did the Harvard study): Each 500mg cap has 375mg EPA and 40mg DHA. 2) TwinLab Mega Twin EPA Fish Oil: Each Softgel contains 600mg EPA and 240mg DHA.
Does anyone have advice on which brand would be best to take and what dose?
thanks,
Peter

I think the best brands are probably Carlsons and Eskimo 3, as they are supposed to be almost completely free of mercury and other toxins.
Bottled versions are supposed to be better than capsules too (and are easier to take).

"She takes 10 softgels daily, so that's 3g total Omega-3 (1800mg EPA + 1200mg DHA)."
Really???? TEN... does anyone but me question a formulation that requires that volume of softgels?
Doesn't that get really pricey?

I buy the cheapo brand at my supermarket when they have a 2 for 1 sale.

I took Carlson's liquid for a long time--it packs a bigger EPA punch and no fishy burps. But then I travelled overseas this summer, and it would have been very hard to tote open fish oil bottles around, especially in hot climates. So I bought a gelcap version. I do have to take a whole lot of capsules to get the amount of EPA I need, but I got used to the capsules and find them easier to deal with than the liquid now. I'm not happy about taking gelatin pills, because of the animal source of the gelatin, but I am overlooking that negative for now.
I use a brand that claims to be free of metals and toxins, etc.
This is the end of the thread.
