Hi all this is my first post on dr. Bob and even though I am no expert on health related issues I do have a theory as far as this issue is concerned. Seratonin helps signals across the snyapse in neurons correct? So isn't it possible all the muscle problems that arise from the tryptophan are just because the dose is way to high? I hear everyone taking 500-1000 mg pills of this whereas I am taking 50 mg 5-HTP from Natrol... and honestly haven't felt this happy since I was around 6 years of age. Perhaps your brain can be overloaded with the surplus of seratonin produced and go into shock. Just a theory anyways... Like I said I am no specialist.

Actually, the Tryptophan doses aren't high at all.
500mg of Tryptophan is equal to 50mg 5-htp.
Also there is some concern about 5-htp not being used properly once it has entered the bloodstream.
Here's an article by DR.Harris on the subject.Just scroll down until you see the article on 5-htp.

> www.healthrecovery.com/biochemical_depression.htmlWow... well thank you very much for the information... in fact my heart has been feeling a little weird since I have started to take 5-HTP... I also usually have been taking it with my multi-vitamin so I guess that makes me an idiot. Is tryptophan better and safer to be taking then? And if so are there less dangers in taking it in it's pure form?

Sorry but one more thing to. Since I am in the US and tryptophan in it's pure form is unavailable... should I just take the tryptophan with some orange juice in the morning or in the afternoon on an empty stomach?

As far as tryptophan being better, alot of people have tried 5-htp with little result but when they swithched to tryptophan they got excellent results.Of course people are different, and some get excellent results with the 5-htp,but I'm still concerned about how it is utilized once it enters the bloodstream.
As far as the safety of tryptophan is concerned,I believe it is safer and you can buy the pharmaceutically pure stuff from a couple different sources on the net. Also unlike 5-htp,it is required that you take B3 or a B vitamin complex so that the tryptophan can be converted to serotonin.
Also check out the discussion on this forum about tryptophan,I think it gives a couple of sources where you can buy it.Also you can order it from the site of the article I refered you to in the earlier post, just scroll to the bottom of the page and click on individual product ordering.

hmm... well thanks for all the info Lotus. You were very helpful. I'm new to the boards so I didn't even know if anyone would reaspond. But thank you very much for all the info... 5-HTP is working for me though... however it is said that it is best to take it without food so most of it does not get utilized into your bloodstream which is obviously when all the problems occur.

>>>>> In what way does your heart feel "weird"? I notice that tryptophan seems to "rev" my heartbeat up...it seems that my heart beats faster after taking it.

Well... I was taking it with food as per directions on the bottle only thing was it was making my heart race and have an irregular heart beat every now and then... when I take it on an empty stomach I notice a little bit of racing but not so much. My only issue is the fact that I also take Adderall and a fairly hefty dose of it as well (70mg) and my heart never does anything unnormal in affects with that. However if I don't take it with food I am usually okay although sometimes it does feel as though my heart almost quivers... but that has happened before even without the Tryptophan.
This is the end of the thread.
