How do you think Babble is improved by losing Alex for 37 weeks?
Do you just forget her for that time? Is she off your radar? hoping she has some other form of support? what if she doesn't??

I feel sad about losing Alex, though. I wish this community could've helped her avoid this block. She may be out of sight, but she's not out of mind. I do hope she has other forms of support. There's always that listing compiled by a poster of helpful web pages on coping with crisis:

The formula has an interesting impersonal psychology.
It's not like you are being punished.
It's as if you have fallen (out of grace?) into a state of incivility at which point, because the aim of the site is to maintain it, the formula must therefore be employed.
It might be a little like the lie detector? It gives that reassuring feeling of impartial dealing, and relies on the technological fix.
It's entertaining (I suppose), and revealing of the cultural biases to which we are all prone.

When I am banished - it feels personal. It FEELS like a punishment for misbehavior. It IS in fact just that.
Do you think Alex feels "reassured" during 37 weeks of banishment?
I don't find any of this entertaining. Do you? Do you think Dr Bob does?

I thought perhaps BL was trying to figure out what this part of your post meant:
>It's entertaining (I suppose), and ....
That's how I read it, anyway.
No doubt I could be utterly wrong.

The civility rules prevented me from saying what I thought of the formula, although I note that Orwellian has escaped censure.
There *is* the whole context of my post.
(I suppose I'm tired of babble and Babble is tired of me. Sometimes things don't work out. Mostly they don't. You have a community, they come to hate each other. C'est la vie, FWIW. My friends went years ago. I don't know what I'm doing here.)
For the record, so as not to encourage ambiguity, I am in favour of blocks for some things, but not in excess of 1 month at most and mainly less. Certainly blocks prevented discussion on the Politics Board.
This is the end of the thread.
