I consider the threat of force because of the statement "The attack that was launched by G.W. Bush has similarities of A. Hitler's attack on Poland (the incidences at the border)" as unethical and alarming.
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/poli/20081212/msgs/876023.html
I consider it as a duty to learn from history. Learning means listen to what people say, listen to older people who experienced wars and how wars started.
Everything else is ignorance. Ignorance can be abhorrent. I lived at places where families had fear of death because of an attack. Maybe my grandfather stood at borders too? My ability to give I-statements here is clearly limited.
I advice you to make sure that 'deputies' use ethical guidelines rightly.
there are some people in discussion. Debate about what happened makes sense. History will prove.

Please do not repeat something that has been ruled uncivil per site guidelines.
I have issued more than one warning about following site guidelines, and in particular about repeating things that you have been warned about saying. I have informed you of the consequences of continuing to fail to follow site guidelines. I have tried to help you object to my actions in a way that would not be in violation of site guidelines.
I will now have to block you from posting for one week.
If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
Follow-ups regarding these issues, as well as replies to the above posts, should of course themselves be civil.
Dr. Bob is always free to override deputy decisions. His email is on the bottom of each page. Please feel free to email him if you believe this decision was made in error. Complaints about the unethical behavior of deputies should be made directly to him, since deputies are also posters covered by site civility guidelines.

Just as well we're here and now.
Hitler once had many supporters who tended to feel very put down.

I could do a few of those too, you know, Sigismund. And I don't think you'd like it all that much if I did.
But I'd feel pretty sad that it had come to that.

I'm going to check out the Faith board to see how it works over there........civility..

I am trying to understand this. sdb made a comparison between Hitler's unprovoked invasion of neighboring countries and Bush's invasion of Iraq based on false pretenses which you found to be an uncivil comparison because it might offend supporters of military interventions. Just to clarify, are supporters of Hitler offended, Dinah, because of the comparison to Bush or are Bush supporters offended here because of the comparison to Hitler?
If I were to suggest that Kenndy's involvement in the failed Bay of Pigs invation was a mistake, would that be uncivil to supporters of the invasion even if JFK himself considered it ill advised?

If you believe I was in error, please contact Dr. Bob by email since he does not read the board regularly. If he reverses what I did it will be ok to continue to make those statements about anyone. Until then, it is not.

I am just trying to understand the politics board rules. No government policy can be criticised here because someone who supports that policy might feel put down, is that correct?

I checked on Faith board and it appears to me that people there talk about their faith as if it is the only one that works.
No one here talks of either party being the only way for deliverance.
I am not getting it. I will be very uneasy if we can't discuss the positives and negatives of our government. I don't care if that big purple thing, on t.v., is the president. I do not get upset when someone posts about their party. If someone bashes my choices, that is upsetting.
I don't feel that any of us are doing that, Dinah.

You wrote,[...that big purple thing...].
I am unsure as to what that is that you are referring to. If you could identify it, then I could have the opportunity to respond accordingly.

The sentiments of Europeans are liable to differ from those of Americans.
The memory of the war is much closer and the lessons learned not yet forgotten.
I think that is relevant; sdb is a most civil and friendly poster, and I would like to say that for the record.

Dr. Bob has indicated that it against site policy to post things that could lead supporters of a politician or citizens of a country, etc. to feel accused or put down.
I believed that comparisons to Hitler would fall into this category.
Until Dr. Bob says otherwise, comparisons to Hitler are not allowed under site policy. If Dr. Bob rules that it is not in fact uncivil to compare to Hitler, then everyone will be free to compare anyone or anything they wish to Hitler. I will follow Dr. Bob's guidance in the matter.
In the course of deciding what violates board policy in the area of Politics, it is inevitable that at times deputies will interpret the guidelines differently than Dr. Bob would. Reasonable people do differ in their interpretations, and Dr. Bob and the deputies are aware of that.
But until and unless Dr. Bob overrides the decision, it is important not to compare anyone to Hitler. But it would be fine to say, for example "I think comparisons to Hitler should be considered civil."
A PBC doesn't say anything about a poster. It's a clarification of board policy or a reminder of board policy. A block only means that a poster has continued to do what they have previously been PBC'd for. It isn't punishment, and it isn't indictment of a poster. It is merely the only method to reinforce a PBC if reinforcement is needed.
I have tried, per a previous discussion with a Politics board poster, to use PBC's in an educational way, since enforcement on the board until recently has been lax. So in that spirit, I did everything I possibly could to explain, to point out civil alternatives, etc. If it is helpful, I will continue to do so. If it proves not to be helpful, I will discontinue.
If you wish Dr. Bob to consider comparisons to Hitler civil, you may email him with that information, or post here "I wish for comparisons to Hitler to be considered civil."
I hope this is helpful, because I do not see it as within my abilities to clarify further.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe there is a significant distinction between comparing the person Bush with Hitler and their respective invasions.
What is the intention of the politics board if not to provide adults with a forum to discuss policy?

Can we reference Castro's actions?
Actually, Dinah, what are we allowed to talk about on the Politics Board?
I can't imagine posting about my nephew's death, in Iraq, and not indicating that I think his death was not necessary. After all, we lost a beloved family member and the Army lost a top notch surgeon.
Am I being uncivil? If I am, what group am I offender and/or hurting?
What has Bob indicated to you about being so strict with the Politics board?
I will be frank with you. I think we're under a microscope because the board was in turmoil awhile back. No one who is a regular there was responsible for those posts.
I' m sure that I'll get another PBC because I may be hurting someone because I'll be accusing or putting someone down.
Shaking head. I feel like the posters are screwed regardless of what we post. I'm not going to post and say that I LOVE everything our government does.

Do you contact Bob before making a decision to PBC or ban someone? I doubt it. If I can't get answers from you, I won't get answers. Unless Bob reads this and decides to answer me with one of his questions.

I think the difference her is *who* is involved. And if things are historical or current.
I remember it from admin posts a couple of years ago that Dr. Bob ruled that it would be expected that reasonable people would all agree that H. was a bad dude.
But, reasonable people *can* disagree about current events and current world leaders.
So we should, as adults, be able to discuss our disagreements without getting personal.
Though...I haven't read the posts in question, I just stumbled onto this thread.

I think it has to do with such nit picky rules that everything thing has to be picked apart to see if it is civil or not. Good rules are understandable to all, not needing a Phd. in English or Philosophy to understand...
I personally think less picky rules would help Babble overall, and fit with the enforcement of rules with the deputies having less to do or decipher.
